Job Description
Job Title: Radiological Control Technician
Job Description
This role supports radiation protection and environmental remediation activities in an active industrial setting. You will perform radiological surveys, implement contamination control measures, manage radiation work permits, support dosimetry and radiation monitoring, and help ensure ALARA principles and regulatory requirements are consistently met. The position directly supports field operations, waste characterization, emergency response, and radiological safety programs.
Responsibilities
- Perform routine and specialized radiological surveys, including dose rate monitoring, smear surveys, and area monitoring to verify radiological conditions and ensure safe work practices.
- Set up, operate, and maintain radiation detection instrumentation, air sampling and air monitoring equipment, and electronic dosimeters to support field activities.
- Prepare, implement, and manage Radiation Work Permits (RWPs), ensuring all radiological controls, limits, and protective measures are clearly defined and communicated.
- Apply contamination control practices, including use of barriers, postings, decontamination techniques, and housekeeping standards to prevent the spread of radioactive materials.
- Implement ALARA principles in planning and executing work, including recommending process changes, work sequencing, shielding, and time/distance optimization to minimize dose.
- Support environmental remediation activities by performing radiological characterization, supporting waste segregation, and assisting with radioactive waste management and waste characterization.
- Conduct air sampling and air monitoring to assess airborne radioactivity and verify effectiveness of engineering and administrative controls.
- Support dosimetry programs by issuing, tracking, and reviewing dosimeters and electronic dosimeters, and by documenting and reporting dose results as required.
- Assist with decontamination activities and radiological release surveys for tools, equipment, materials, and work areas.
- Participate in emergency response activities related to radiological incidents, including initial assessment, monitoring, contamination control, and documentation.
- Ensure compliance with applicable NRC, DOE, OSHA, and environmental regulations, as well as site-specific procedures and radiological control requirements.
- Prepare clear and accurate technical reports, survey records, logs, and documentation of radiological conditions, controls, and incidents.
- Support nuclear, DOE, D&D, construction, and environmental remediation projects by providing radiological oversight at construction sites and active industrial locations.
- Work effectively in confined spaces and under respiratory protection when required, following all safety and regulatory requirements.
- Collaborate with field crews, supervision, and safety staff to plan work, communicate radiological conditions, and promote a strong safety and radiation protection culture.
Essential Skills
- Hazwoper 40 certification.
- Minimum of 3+ years of radiological controls or radiation protection experience.
- Hands-on experience with radiation detection instrumentation and monitoring equipment.
- Demonstrated experience preparing and managing Radiation Work Permits (RWPs) and performing radiological surveys.
- Knowledge of contamination control practices and ALARA implementation.
- Ability to work safely in industrial or field environments, including active construction and remediation sites.
- Experience as a Radiological Control Technician (RCT), Radiation Protection Technician (RPT), Health Physics Technician, Nuclear Technician, DOE Radiation Control Technician, or Environmental Remediation Technician, or closely related experience.
- Proficiency in radiation surveys, contamination control, air sampling and monitoring, and dosimetry.
- Familiarity with environmental remediation and radiological controls in industrial or nuclear settings.
- Capability to follow regulatory requirements and site procedures, including NRC, DOE, OSHA, and environmental regulations.
- Ability to work in physically demanding conditions, including outdoor environments and industrial shipyard settings.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- DOE Core qualification or DOE radiological control experience.
- NRRPT certification.
- Additional HAZWOPER training beyond the 40-hour requirement.
- Experience in nuclear, DOE, decontamination and decommissioning (D&D), environmental remediation, or radioactive waste management.
- Experience with construction, construction safety, and work at construction or demolition sites.
- Knowledge of radiation safety, radiation protection, and health physics practices.
- Experience with smear surveys, dose rate monitoring, electronic dosimeters, and air monitoring and air sampling techniques.
- Familiarity with gamma spectroscopy and radiation detection equipment for characterization and monitoring.
- Experience with radioactive waste management, waste characterization, and decontamination activities.
- Knowledge of confined space entry requirements and respiratory protection programs.
- Experience supporting emergency response and incident management for radiological events.
- Strong technical reporting skills, including the ability to produce accurate logs, survey records, and regulatory documentation.
- Experience in nuclear power, DOE facilities, or similar regulated environments.
