Position Summary
Our client is a fully integrated real estate and mortgage services firm overseeing more than $46 billion in assets for over 50 institutional clients, with 1,100+ professionals across 10 U.S. locations delivering loan servicing, property management, mortgage originations, renovations, and insurance. The Senior Controller leads enterprise accounting, payroll, and accounts payable across all entities, ensures timely month-end close and accurate financial reporting, and serves as the primary liaison with external audit firms. Deep expertise in mortgage servicing finance or financial services is required, along with strong leadership and a proactive approach to process improvement and risk management. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
- Lead enterprise accounting, payroll, and accounts payable functions across all entities.
- Own timely month-end close processes and accurate internal and external financial reporting.
- Serve as the primary liaison with external financial audit firms and coordinate multiple audits.
- Collaborate with third-party valuation firms to assess mortgage servicing rights (MSRs) and ensure compliance with relevant accounting standards.
- Oversee cash flow management, balance sheet reconciliations, intercompany balancing, and bank reconciliations.
- Maintain and strengthen internal controls designed to deter fraud.
- Manage disbursement reviews, payroll, debt reporting, and lender covenant compliance.
- Support enterprise-wide budgeting and forecasting.
- Review contracts to determine asset ownership and ensure proper financial recognition.
Technical Accounting & Process Improvement
- Document management's position on current and emerging accounting treatments under U.S. GAAP impacting the entities.
- Identify and implement opportunities for process optimization across accounting operations.
- Enhance key accounting processes and controls and keep procedures current and documented.
- Act as the finance executive liaison with auditors and regulators.
- Develop, enhance, and document accounting policies and procedures.
Leadership
- Guide, coach, and develop the accounting team.
- Lead matrix teams and cross-functional projects to completion.
- Foster positive employee engagement, trust, and a culture of accountability.
Qualifications
Must Have
- Mortgage servicing experience is required — this role will not be considered without it.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- CPA or equivalent professional certification.
- 15+ years of progressive accounting experience.
- 10+ years in a senior accounting role within mortgage servicing for financial services segments, including Controller-level experience.
- Previous experience managing people and leading teams.
- Strong financial reporting, summarization, and communication skills, including presenting complex financial data to executive stakeholders.
- Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, investor reporting requirements (Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Ginnie Mae), and MSR valuation, with experience in financial audits, internal controls, and regulatory compliance.
- Deep understanding of enterprise accounting systems, cash flow operations, cost structures, and financial resource planning.
- Advanced proficiency in accounting software systems with exceptional organizational and recordkeeping capabilities.
- Experience with mortgage servicing platforms and ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, or similar).
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Ability to sit in Tampa, FL, Dallas, TX, or Rosemont, IL.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience leading enterprise-wide accounting transformations or system implementations.
- Experience supporting lender covenant reporting and complex debt structures.
- Experience in a multi-entity, private-equity or institutionally backed environment.
