Position Overview

We are seeking an Operator-In-Training to support the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of water and wastewater treatment facilities.

This entry-level opportunity is ideal for someone interested in developing a career in water/wastewater treatment, environmental operations, plant maintenance, or utilities. The position will assist with treatment processes, laboratory sampling, equipment inspections, preventive maintenance, recordkeeping, and regulatory compliance.

The successful candidate must be safety-conscious, dependable, willing to learn, and comfortable working in both indoor and outdoor environments.

Key Responsibilities

Water & Wastewater Operations

  • Assist with operating and maintaining water and wastewater treatment plants, treatment systems, and related facilities.
  • Monitor treatment processes and perform routine inspections to ensure equipment and systems are operating properly.
  • Conduct basic laboratory tests and collect samples to verify treatment performance.
  • Record sample results, meter readings, operational information, and other required data.

Equipment Inspection & Maintenance

  • Perform routine preventive and corrective maintenance on treatment plant equipment.
  • Conduct daily visual inspections of lagoons and treatment processes.
  • Inspect pumps, motors, valves, gauges, compressors, control panels, analyzers, and chlorination/dechlorination equipment.
  • Identify equipment issues and report abnormalities or maintenance requirements.
  • Assist with maintaining samplers and other operational equipment.

Compliance & Documentation

  • Maintain accurate operating logs, maintenance records, sampling records, and other required documentation.
  • Collect and document samples in accordance with applicable discharge permits.
  • Maintain records required by plant QA/QC programs and applicable environmental regulations.
  • Use computer systems for data entry, reporting, recordkeeping, and maintenance management.
  • Learn and effectively use the site's Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).

Facility & Grounds Maintenance

  • Perform routine cleaning, custodial, and general maintenance activities throughout treatment facilities.
  • Help maintain plant grounds, lagoon dikes, buffer zones, farm roads, fences, and related areas.
  • Operate City vehicles and heavy equipment as needed.
  • Assist with manual labor and material handling activities as required.

Safety & Teamwork

  • Follow all established safety policies, procedures, and environmental requirements.
  • Maintain professional and cooperative working relationships with coworkers and supervisors.
  • Participate in training, conferences, short courses, and other professional development activities.
  • Stay current with applicable operating procedures, technical materials, reports, and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in after-hours on-call services as required.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Basic computer skills, including word processing and spreadsheets.
  • Ability and willingness to learn water/wastewater treatment operations and maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and follow established procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.

Preferred Background

Experience or coursework in any of the following is a plus:

  • Water or wastewater treatment
  • Utilities or municipal operations
  • Environmental services
  • Industrial maintenance
  • Mechanical equipment
  • Laboratory testing
  • Plant operations
  • Environmental science or a related technical field

Physical & Environmental Requirements

  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, reach, and use hands to operate tools, equipment, and controls.
  • Ability to move materials weighing up to 25 pounds routinely and perform tasks requiring occasional handling of materials weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity and physical coordination are required.
  • Ability to work in laboratories, treatment facilities, confined spaces, and outdoor environments.
  • May be exposed to varying weather conditions, fumes, oils, chemicals, wastewater, and other industrial or environmental hazards.
  • Must be able to follow required safety procedures and use appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Must be available for after-hours on-call assignments when required.
