Job Description
Special Education Teacher (Adaptive Classroom)
Location: Wilson, NC Area
Pay Rate: $42-$45 per hour
Schedule: Full-Time, 40 Hours per Week
Contract Duration: Current School Year
Position Overview
We are seeking a compassionate and experienced Special Education Teacher to support a K-2 adaptive classroom serving students with significant disabilities. This classroom environment is designed to provide intensive academic, behavioral, communication, and life skills support to students, including non-verbal learners and students with autism spectrum disorders.
The classroom consists of approximately 14 students and is supported by two full-time teaching assistants. The teacher will play a key role in delivering individualized instruction, implementing IEPs, monitoring student progress, and fostering a safe and inclusive learning environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide specialized instruction aligned with each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP)
- Develop and implement lesson plans that address academic, social, behavioral, and functional skill development
- Collaborate with teaching assistants, related service providers, administrators, and families to support student success
- Maintain accurate documentation and progress monitoring for IEP goals
- Participate in staff meetings, IEP meetings, and other required school-based activities
- Create a structured, supportive, and engaging classroom environment
- Support students with daily living skills and personal care needs, including bathroom assistance and diaper changing when required
- Utilize evidence-based practices to support students with severe disabilities and complex learning needs
Qualifications
Required
- Active North Carolina Exceptional Children (EC) teaching license in hand
- Previous experience working with students with severe disabilities
- Experience supporting students with autism spectrum disorders and non-verbal communication needs
- Ability and willingness to assist students with personal care and toileting needs
- Strong classroom management and collaboration skills
Additional Requirements
- Must successfully complete all required onboarding requirements, including a district-specific background check
- Must attend required staff meetings and other school-related duties as assigned
- Overtime may be approved for participation in additional IEP meetings when necessary
Schedule
- Work Hours: 7:20 AM - 3:30 PM
- Working Hours per Week: 40
- Lunch: Unpaid
