Job Title: Test Engineering GeneralistJob Description

The Test Engineering Generalist designs, develops, and owns the test capabilities that support power electronics validation in both the lab and factory operations. This engineering role focuses on creating and maintaining automated test software (primarily in Python), designing test fixtures and hardware, defining test requirements and procedures, and performing test coverage analysis to ensure products are thoroughly and reliably tested. The position also involves hands-on system-level testing and validation of electronic components, modules, and drives to stay closely aligned with real lab and production needs, enabling higher-volume production and relieving design engineering of test-related work.

Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and maintain automated test software, primarily in Python, for data acquisition, instrument control, and automated test sequencing.
  • Build and maintain scripts and applications that interface with test equipment such as power supplies, data acquisition systems, oscilloscopes, and electronic loads, and capture, process, and report test data.
  • Apply robust software development practices, including version control, code review, and documentation, to ensure test software is maintainable, reusable, and consistent across programs.
  • Design and develop test fixtures, harnessing, and hardware for validating power electronic products, motor drives, and control systems.
  • Produce and maintain electrical schematics and fixture layouts, and participate in design reviews for new test fixtures and material specifications.
  • Ensure test fixtures and hardware meet electrical safety requirements to prevent electrical shock and support safe operation in the lab and production environments.
  • Develop test requirements and procedures that translate product and engineering requirements into executable, repeatable test methods.
  • Perform test coverage analysis to identify gaps between product requirements and existing test capabilities, and recommend or build additional tests to close those gaps.
  • Contribute to the creation of electrical and mechanical test documentation for industrial motor control and power conversion test systems.
  • Lay out, build, test, troubleshoot, and modify electronic developmental components and systems according to engineering instructions and standards.
  • Document and analyze test data, evaluate the performance and reliability of prototype and production units, and recommend changes in circuitry or installation specifications to simplify assembly and maintenance.
  • Test and validate enclosed systems and loose-part orders, including point-to-point verification of wiring and system layout against schematics, three-phase power hookup, low-voltage circuit checks, bus voltage bring-up, and hookup to customer or test motors to verify drive performance.
  • Test and validate modules and drives using engineering drawings and electrical schematics, and document test results clearly and accurately.
  • Support production and service test stands by helping maintain, update, and improve existing test stands to meet evolving product and volume needs.
  • Collaborate with design engineering and other stakeholders to transition test-related responsibilities from design engineering to dedicated test engineering, enabling higher-volume production and more robust test processes.
  • Manage multiple test engineering projects simultaneously, balancing lab development work with production support and documentation activities.
Essential Skills
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related technical field.
  • 5+ years of experience in test engineering, DVP&R, product validation, or embedded/test software development.
  • Demonstrated hands-on Python software development experience in areas such as test automation, instrument control, or data acquisition scripting, with the ability to discuss or show examples of previous work.
  • Ability to design test fixtures and hardware from schematic capture through build and safety checkout, ensuring compliance with electrical safety requirements.
  • Ability to write clear, executable test requirements and procedures and perform test coverage analysis against product requirements.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and component specification sheets.
  • Experience working safely around energized electrical systems up to 690 Vac and 1500 Vdc.
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills, with the ability to produce clear documentation for test systems and results.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at once, prioritizing tasks and meeting deadlines in a dynamic engineering environment.
  • Hands-on hardware engineering experience with test stands and test equipment in a power electronics or related environment.
  • Practical experience building, troubleshooting, and validating electronic systems, modules, and drives.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience with Altium Designer or similar schematic capture and PCB design tools.
  • Experience with AutoCAD Electrical for electrical design and documentation.
  • Experience with SolidWorks 3D for mechanical design and fixture development.
  • Familiarity with PLCs, embedded controllers, and data acquisition systems used in industrial test environments.
  • Familiarity with instrument control frameworks such as PyVISA, as well as LabVIEW or MATLAB for test automation and data processing.
  • Knowledge of UL and CE standards as they relate to industrial control panels and test systems.
  • Experience developing or supporting lab and end-of-line production test stands for higher-volume manufacturing.
  • Comfort working as a generalist across hardware engineering, test stands and equipment, test engineering software, and test requirements and coverage analysis.
  • Ability to contribute to continuous improvement of test processes, tooling, and documentation in both lab and production settings.
  • Interest in owning test infrastructure and collaborating with cross-functional teams to enhance product validation and production efficiency.
