About this job

Welding Engineer: Shipbuilding & Marine Fabrication

Job Summary

Core Group Resources is hiring an experienced Welding Engineer to support procedure development, qualification, and production welding in a shipbuilding and heavy marine fabrication environment. You'll develop and maintain welding procedures that meet ASME, AWS, ABS, NAVSEA, and customer requirements. You'll also work directly with production, quality, engineering, and the trades to make sure welding operations are code compliant, cost effective, and workable in the field.

This is a hands-on engineering role. About 60% of the time is spent in the shipyard, on vessels, and in production areas rather than at a desk.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, qualify, and maintain Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and Procedure Qualification Records (PQR) to ASME, AWS, ABS, NAVSEA, and other applicable codes.
  • Set welding requirements for materials, joint design, processes, preheat, post-weld heat treatment, and specialized fabrication methods.
  • Review customer specifications, drawings, and contracts to determine the welding requirements that apply.
  • Improve existing procedures based on production needs, code changes, and new welding technology.
  • Evaluate processes, consumables, and equipment to improve quality, productivity, and cost.
  • Review supplier and subcontractor welding procedures for technical adequacy and code compliance.
  • Research and obtain code interpretations when needed.
  • Maintain qualification and certification records for welders, tackers, brazers, and welding and brazing operators, and support their initial qualification and recertification.
  • Provide technical guidance on welding defects, repairs, non-conformances, and production issues.
  • Train welders and other metal-joining trades on procedures, codes, NAVSEA requirements, and contract requirements, and give technical coaching and feedback on the floor.
  • Travel between project and shipyard locations as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering or a related engineering or technical discipline.
  • 6+ years of relevant welding experience, including at least 3 years of welding engineering experience in an engineering department or similar technical organization.
  • 3+ years working within ASME, AISC, or comparable quality programs.
  • Experience developing and qualifying WPS and PQR documentation.
  • Working knowledge of welding codes and standards, processes, metallurgy, joint design, heat treatment, and fabrication practices.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings, specifications, work orders, contracts, and technical publications.
  • Experience providing technical support in an active production or fabrication environment.
  • Strong documentation and technical writing skills, and accurate recordkeeping for qualifications and certifications.
  • Clear communication with engineers, quality, project management, trades, and customers.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, Access, and database applications.

Preferred Requirements

  • Shipbuilding, ship repair, marine fabrication, defense, or heavy industrial fabrication experience.
  • Working knowledge of NAVSEA welding requirements, including NAVSEA 248 and related training.
  • Experience in government or defense contracting environments.
  • Certified Welding Inspector (CWI).
  • ASNT NDT certification.
  • Extensive hands-on craft welding experience.
  • Experience delivering welding or technical training to production personnel.
