Works With: Faculty Council, Curriculum Committee, Assessment Committee, Registrar, Student Services, and Institutional Leadership

1. Position Summary

The Associate Dean of Academic Affairs & Faculty Development serves as the institution's senior academic administrator responsible for providing experienced college-level academic leadership, faculty supervision, curriculum oversight, academic governance, faculty professional development, and institutional academic quality assurance.

The position is specifically established to strengthen AMAT Healthcare Institute's academic administrative capacity as the institution prepares for proposed degree-granting operations.

The Associate Dean shall apply prior experience in an accredited degree-granting institution to guide faculty, Program Directors, and academic administrators in the implementation of appropriate collegiate academic standards.

The Associate Dean shall possess documented experience supervising college faculty, managing academic programs, overseeing curriculum development, conducting faculty evaluations, and participating in higher education academic governance.

2. Faculty Leadership and Supervision

The Associate Dean shall:

  • Provide leadership and oversight of the institution's faculty management system.
  • Supervise and mentor the Director of Academic Affairs and Program Directors.
  • Establish faculty performance expectations consistent with institutional policies.
  • Review faculty qualifications and proposed teaching assignments.
  • Ensure faculty assignments are consistent with their academic credentials and professional expertise.
  • Oversee faculty evaluation procedures.
  • Conduct classroom observations and review instructional effectiveness.
  • Mentor faculty transitioning from certificate-level instruction to college-level education.
  • Review faculty workload and allocation of instructional, advising, curriculum, and governance responsibilities.
  • Participate in faculty recruitment, selection, orientation, reappointment, and performance-improvement recommendations.
  • Ensure appropriate faculty participation in academic committees.

3. College-Level Curriculum Oversight

The Associate Dean shall:

  • Guide academic personnel in the development and evaluation of collegiate curricula.
  • Review course syllabi, learning outcomes, instructional methods, and assessment strategies.
  • Ensure that proposed degree-level coursework demonstrates appropriate academic rigor.
  • Support faculty in applying Bloom's Taxonomy and higher-order learning objectives.
  • Review curriculum mapping and alignment between institutional, program, and course learning outcomes.
  • Oversee periodic curriculum reviews through the established Curriculum Committee.
  • Review the institution's credit-hour methodology and documentation of faculty-directed instructional activity.
  • Ensure faculty retain meaningful responsibility for curriculum development and evaluation.

4. Academic Governance

The Associate Dean shall:

  • Provide experienced leadership for the institution's academic governance structure.
  • Coordinate with the Faculty Council, Curriculum Committee, and Assessment/Institutional Effectiveness Committee.
  • Ensure academic committee responsibilities are clearly established.
  • Promote faculty participation in educational policy and curriculum decisions.
  • Review committee recommendations and ensure appropriate follow-up.
  • Maintain appropriate academic decision-making processes.
  • Ensure academic decisions are documented and implemented through established procedures.

5. Faculty Professional Development

The Associate Dean shall develop and oversee a faculty professional-development program addressing:

  • College-level teaching methodologies;
  • Curriculum development;
  • Student-learning outcomes;
  • Assessment and grading practices;
  • Bloom's Taxonomy;
  • Academic advising;
  • Credit-hour expectations;
  • Faculty-directed academic engagement;
  • Academic integrity;
  • Academic governance;
  • Instructional technology; and
  • Continuous improvement in teaching effectiveness.

Professional-development activities shall include documented objectives, attendance, materials, and follow-up evaluation.

6. Faculty Evaluation and Improvement

The Associate Dean shall:

  • Oversee annual faculty evaluations.
  • Conduct or coordinate classroom observations.
  • Review teaching effectiveness and student-learning outcomes.
  • Evaluate faculty participation in curriculum and governance.
  • Identify professional-development needs.
  • Develop and monitor faculty improvement plans where necessary.
  • Maintain appropriate evaluation documentation.
  • Ensure inexperienced faculty receive additional instructional supervision and mentoring.

7. Academic Program Leadership

The Associate Dean shall:

  • Provide senior academic oversight to Program Directors.
  • Review program-level academic performance.
  • Monitor the implementation of academic policies.
  • Review course completion, academic progression, and student-learning assessment results.
  • Guide Program Directors in addressing academic deficiencies.
  • Review academic resource needs.
  • Coordinate academic improvement initiatives with institutional leadership.

8. Institutional Effectiveness and Assessment

The Associate Dean shall:

  • Oversee academic assessment planning.
  • Review program and course learning outcomes.
  • Monitor academic achievement benchmarks.
  • Review faculty and program assessment reports.
  • Ensure academic improvement recommendations are documented.
  • Monitor implementation of corrective actions.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of academic improvement initiatives.
  • Report academic effectiveness findings to the School Director and appropriate institutional committees.

9. NYSED Degree-Granting Preparation

The Associate Dean shall serve as a senior academic leader responsible for assisting AMAT Healthcare Institute with preparation for proposed degree-granting operations.

Responsibilities include:

  • Providing documented college-level academic administrative experience.
  • Strengthening faculty oversight and academic leadership.
  • Ensuring faculty qualifications are appropriate for proposed collegiate instruction.
  • Supporting development of college-level curricula.
  • Reviewing academic credit-hour practices.
  • Strengthening faculty governance.
  • Supporting faculty professional development.
  • Reviewing academic advising and student-learning assessment systems.
  • Participating in institutional self-study and NYSED review activities.
  • Coordinating responses to academic findings identified during NYSED reviews.
  • Preparing academic improvement reports and implementation evidence.
  • Participating in meetings with NYSED representatives when requested.

The Associate Dean shall ensure that academic policies and practices are appropriate to the institution's current authorizations and proposed future operations.

10. Required Qualifications

Education

  • Earned master's degree from an appropriately accredited institution in Higher Education Administration, Educational Leadership, Education, Healthcare Education, Academic Administration, or a closely related field.

Professional Experience

  • Minimum five years of relevant professional experience working within an accredited degree-granting college or university.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising and evaluating college-level faculty.
  • Experience serving as a college academic administrator, department chair, academic director, dean, associate dean, or comparable academic leadership position.
  • Documented involvement in college-level curriculum development and evaluation.
  • Experience implementing academic policies and faculty governance procedures.
  • Experience conducting faculty evaluations and classroom observations.
  • Experience in academic assessment and institutional effectiveness.
  • Knowledge of college-level instructional standards and academic credit practices.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate in Higher Education Administration, Education, Educational Leadership, or a related field.
  • Seven or more years of college-level academic leadership experience.
  • Prior service as an Academic Dean, Associate Dean, Assistant Dean, or Department Chair.
  • Experience with associate-degree programs.
  • Experience supervising faculty in allied health or healthcare education.
  • Familiarity with NYSED academic regulations.
  • Experience preparing for institutional accreditation or state higher education reviews.
  • Experience with academic governance, faculty workload, and faculty professional development.

11. Authority and Accountability

The Associate Dean shall possess documented authority to:

  • Supervise assigned academic administrators and faculty.
  • Conduct faculty performance evaluations.
  • Recommend faculty appointments and teaching assignments.
  • Require corrective academic improvement measures consistent with institutional policy.
  • Oversee implementation of academic standards.
  • Convene academic leadership meetings.
  • Review academic committee recommendations.
  • Direct implementation of approved academic improvement plans.
  • Report academic compliance concerns to the School Director.

The Associate Dean shall respect the faculty's established responsibilities for curriculum, instruction, academic assessment, and educational policy.

12. Performance Evaluation

The Associate Dean shall be evaluated annually based on:

  • Effectiveness of faculty supervision;
  • Faculty qualifications and development;
  • Quality of academic administration;
  • Curriculum oversight;
  • Faculty governance effectiveness;
  • Academic assessment and improvement;
  • Program Director mentoring;
  • Academic regulatory compliance;
  • Quality of institutional academic documentation; and
  • Progress toward institutional academic readiness.
