Job Description
Legal Fellow — JD Required | Michigan Bar Admission Not Required
Municipal Legal Department
Preferred candidate geography: Northern Oakland County or Southern Genesee County, Michigan
Earned your JD and looking to put your legal education to work?
A municipality is seeking a motivated Legal Fellow interested in gaining practical legal experience while contributing to public service.
This opportunity is an excellent fit for a recent law school graduate who is postponing taking the Michigan Bar exam and wants to continue developing legal skills in a professional setting. A Juris Doctor degree is required; passing the Michigan Bar exam is not required.
Candidates located in Northern Oakland County or Southern Genesee County are especially encouraged to apply. This is a geographic preference, not a residency requirement.
The Opportunity
Work alongside municipal attorneys and gain exposure to legal matters that affect a municipality and its residents. Strengthen your research, writing, and analytical skills while learning how a municipal legal department operates.
Responsibilities may include:
- Conducting legal research and preparing memoranda.
- Assisting attorneys with drafting and reviewing legal documents.
- Supporting case preparation and organizing supporting materials.
- Assisting with matters involving municipal law, litigation, ordinances, and contracts.
- Working with the legal team on projects involving municipal departments and community issues.
Assignments will reflect the fellow’s qualifications and applicable supervision requirements.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor from an accredited law school required.
- Michigan Bar passage or admission is not required.
- Strong legal research, writing, and analytical skills.
- Excellent organization, attention to detail, and follow-through.
- Professional judgment and the ability to handle confidential information.
- Interest in municipal law and public service.
Recent graduates, including those postponing the Michigan Bar exam, are encouraged to apply.
Put Your JD to Work
Build practical experience, contribute to meaningful legal work, and learn from attorneys serving their community.
Apply through ZipRecruiter with your résumé and a brief note describing your interest in the fellowship and your anticipated bar exam plans, if known.
