ASSISTANT STORE MANAGERLong-Term Management Career Opportunity

Company: HalalWay Supermarket
Location: Fairfax, Virginia
Employment Type: Full-time
Schedule: Opening or closing shifts; open-to-close shifts are not required
Starting Pay: $15.00 per hour, negotiable based on relevant experience, qualifications, leadership ability, and skill level

About the Position

HalalWay Supermarket is seeking an experienced, reliable, and highly motivated Assistant Store Manager to support our daily store and floor operations.

This is an active, hands-on leadership position—not a desk job. The Assistant Store Manager will work directly with employees, customers, vendors, deliveries, inventory, merchandising, and upper management to help keep the store operating smoothly and successfully.

We are looking for someone who wants stable, long-term employment and the opportunity to build a genuine career in supermarket management. This position is ideal for an experienced retail professional who is ready to take the next step, strengthen their leadership skills, and work toward eventually becoming a Store Manager.

The right candidate will be trained to understand the entire store operation, including employee supervision, customer service, inventory, shipments, merchandising, product knowledge, sales, POS operations, store standards, and opening and closing procedures.

Our goal is to develop the right person into a confident, knowledgeable, and well-rounded leader who can accept increasing responsibility and eventually manage the store successfully.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with managing daily store operations and maintaining an efficient workflow
  • Open or close the store during assigned shifts
  • Supervise, guide, motivate, and support floor employees
  • Assign daily responsibilities and ensure work is completed correctly and on time
  • Train, coach, and help orient new and existing employees
  • Support management with interviewing, hiring, and onboarding employees when needed
  • Receive, inspect, verify, and organize shipments and vendor deliveries
  • Manage stock replenishment, product rotation, merchandising, and inventory control
  • Stock, restock, price, rotate, and organize merchandise
  • Perform regular aisle inspections for cleanliness, organization, pricing accuracy, product availability, and expiration dates
  • Ensure shelves, displays, coolers, freezers, and aisles remain clean, fully stocked, organized, and presentable
  • Monitor inventory levels and report shortages, damages, or ordering needs to management
  • Assist customers and confidently answer product-related questions
  • Handle customer concerns professionally and resolve basic conflicts promptly
  • Operate and oversee POS systems, sales transactions, cashiering, cash handling, refunds, and authorized pricing adjustments
  • Help maintain accurate pricing and promotional displays throughout the store
  • Support basic recordkeeping, retail calculations, and operational reporting
  • Communicate important staffing, inventory, sales, and customer-service issues to upper management
  • Follow store procedures and help enforce company policies and performance standards
  • Maintain store cleanliness and assist with cleaning whenever necessary
  • Identify problems, take initiative, and help wherever needed to keep the store running properly
Experience and Qualifications
  • Previous grocery, supermarket, retail, or supervisory experience is strongly preferred
  • Experience as a Shift Leader, Department Leader, Assistant Manager, or Store Manager is a plus
  • Proven ability to supervise employees and maintain workplace standards
  • Proficient English communication skills are required
  • Must communicate clearly and professionally with customers, employees, vendors, and management
  • Experience using POS systems, inventory software, or retail-management systems is preferred
  • Basic understanding of cash handling, pricing, discounts, inventory calculations, and retail math
  • Experience with bookkeeping, payroll, purchasing, ordering, or vendor management is valued but not required
  • Bilingual or multilingual abilities are highly valued because of our diverse customer base
  • Must be dependable, punctual, honest, trustworthy, and responsible
  • Strong work ethic with a positive, solution-oriented attitude
  • Excellent organizational, time-management, and prioritization skills
  • Able to multitask and work effectively with limited supervision
  • Willing to accept coaching, learn quickly, and continuously improve
  • Able to remain calm, respectful, and organized in a busy retail environment
  • Comfortable working longer shifts when scheduled
  • Physically able to stand, walk, bend, lift merchandise, and remain active throughout the shift
The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone who:

  • Wants a stable, long-term career—not temporary or short-term employment
  • Is ready to succeed as an Assistant Manager and work toward becoming a Store Manager
  • Takes ownership of responsibilities and follows through without constant reminders
  • Learns quickly and makes a serious effort to shorten the learning curve
  • Is truthful, reliable, dependable, consistent, and accountable
  • Has strong situational awareness and notices what needs attention
  • Communicates respectfully, confidently, and professionally
  • Can make sound decisions and respond appropriately to problems
  • Knows how to motivate employees while also holding them accountable
  • Understands that good leadership means working alongside the team
  • Is willing to assist in any area of the store when necessary
  • Wants to learn the entire store operation rather than focus on only one department
  • Is motivated to improve, accept greater responsibility, and grow with the company
Training and Career Growth

Comprehensive on-the-job training will be provided. Training may include:

  • Store layout and product knowledge
  • Employee supervision and task delegation
  • Customer service and conflict resolution
  • POS operations and cash-handling procedures

  • Store cleanliness, organization, and operating standards

  • Daily management and operational responsibilities

The right person will have opportunities for increased responsibility, higher compensation, and advancement into a Store Manager position.

Career growth will be based on performance, attendance, reliability, leadership ability, judgment, communication skills, product knowledge, operational awareness, and willingness to learn.
