About this job

Description:

Bodell Construction, an Aecon Company, is seeking an experienced Ironworker/Rigger with strong hands-on experience rigging, securing, controlling, and directing loads for crane lifts. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience working with crane operators and ground crews to safely move and precisely place structural steel, equipment, materials, and other loads into tight, congested, or restricted-access areas.

This position requires someone who understands how a load will behave once it leaves the ground and can properly select and configure rigging, establish load control, communicate with the crane operator, and safely guide the load to its final position.

Requirements:

Key Responsibilities
  • Rig, secure, and prepare structural steel, equipment, piping, materials, and other loads for crane lifting operations.
  • Inspect the load before each lift to verify it is properly balanced and secured.
  • Determine appropriate rigging configurations, sling placement, hitch types, and load-control methods based on the load and lifting conditions.
  • Select and properly use slings, shackles, hooks, spreader beams, tag lines, chain falls, come-alongs, and other rigging equipment.
  • Determine load weight and understand the effects of center of gravity, sling angles, hitch configuration, and load distribution on rigging capacity.
  • Work closely with crane operators to safely fly and land loads in tight spaces, congested work areas, around existing structures, and other locations with limited clearance.
  • Use tag lines and other approved methods to maintain control of suspended loads and minimize unwanted rotation, swinging, or movement.
  • Serve as a qualified signal person when required, using standard hand signals and/or radio communication with crane operators.
  • Maintain clear communication with crane operators, spotters, ironworkers, and other craft personnel throughout lifting operations.
  • Recognize potential pinch points, crush hazards, overhead hazards, swing-radius exposures, and changing site conditions before and during lifts.
  • Establish and maintain safe work areas around lifting operations.
  • Inspect rigging equipment before use and immediately remove damaged, defective, or questionable equipment from service.
  • Assist with the erection, positioning, alignment, bolting, and connecting of structural steel and other components, as required.
  • Follow project lift plans, critical-lift requirements, manufacturer recommendations, and site-specific safety procedures.
  • Stop work when lifting conditions become unsafe or when proper communication with the crane operator cannot be maintained.
  • Perform other Ironworker/Rigger duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of industrial or heavy construction ironworker/rigging experience preferred, with significant experience supporting crane operations.
  • Demonstrated experience rigging and controlling loads that must be precisely landed in tight or restricted spaces.
  • Strong working knowledge of:
    • Rigging hardware and inspection
    • Wire-rope and synthetic slings
    • Shackles and hooks
    • Spreader bars/beams
    • Chain falls and come-alongs
    • Hitch configurations
    • Sling angles and capacity
    • Center of gravity and load stability
    • Tag-line and load-control techniques
    • Crane hand signals and radio communication
  • Ability to recognize when a proposed rigging configuration or lift condition is unsafe.
  • Ability to safely work at heights and in active industrial construction environments.
  • Ability to understand and follow lift plans, drawings, specifications, and site safety requirements.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to coordinate closely with crane operators and other craft personnel.
  • Must be dependable, safety-focused, and capable of working effectively as part of a high-performing construction crew.
Preferred Qualifications
  • NCCCO Rigger Level I and/or Level II certification or equivalent recognized rigging qualification.
  • NCCCO Signalperson certification or equivalent.
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Construction training.
  • Previous experience with structural steel erection, industrial construction, mining, power, process piping, heavy civil, or large equipment installation.
  • Experience performing complex or critical lifts where clearance is limited and precise load placement is required.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to regularly lift, carry, push, and pull construction materials and rigging equipment.
  • Ability to climb ladders and stairs and work from elevated structures, scaffolds, and aerial lifts.
  • Ability to work outdoors and in varying weather and site conditions.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment and fall-protection equipment.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work throughout the scheduled shift.
