Job Description
Master Machinist
Location: Tampa, FL
Pay: $25–$36 per hour
Work setting: Machine shop supporting shop repairs and field jobs
About the Role
We’re seeking an experienced Master Machinist to make, repair, and restore parts for pumps and other rotating equipment. You’ll work with mechanics and shop leadership, often using drawings, shop sketches, measurements, or worn sample parts to determine the right repair. This role calls for strong manual machining skills, sound judgment, and consistent accuracy with critical fits and clearances.
Responsibilities
- Set up and operate manual lathes and milling machines with minimal supervision.
- Machine shafts, sleeves, bushings, wear rings, impellers, bearing fits, seal and gland bores, couplings, flanges, and other equipment parts.
- Read blueprints and OEM drawings; work from shop sketches and worn or sample parts.
- Hold close tolerances for running clearances, press fits, concentricity, runout, perpendicularity, and surface finish.
- Measure parts using micrometers, bore gauges, dial bore gauges, dial indicators, and other precision instruments.
- Select suitable tooling and machining methods for stainless steel, bronze, cast iron, carbon steel, plastics, and composites.
- Plan repair machining such as sleeving, bushing, metal buildup and remachining, and line boring.
- Prepare dimensioned shop sketches and record final measurements.
- Coordinate with mechanics during equipment inspection and assembly, and recommend repair methods.
- Maintain machines and a clean, safe work area. Support after-hours or weekend repairs when needed.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of manual machining experience, including independent setup and operation of lathes and milling machines.
- Experience machining critical dimensions for pumps or similar rotating equipment.
- Experience with Vectrax milling machines, Acra lathes, or comparable equipment.
- Strong blueprint reading, shop math, and ability to work from sketches or worn samples.
- Consistent ability to hold close tolerances using precision measuring instruments.
- Trade school, journeyman-level training, or equivalent experience.
- Ability to regularly lift or move up to 50 pounds.
- Experience with marine or industrial repair, horizontal boring, line boring, or grinding is preferred.
Work examples required: Applicants must be able to provide examples of their own machining work, such as photos with descriptions and tolerances, drawings or measurement records, or references who can confirm their experience. This is an experienced professional role, not an entry-level or apprentice position.
