Build Your Career with a Growing Commercial Construction Team
We're recruiting Commercial Carpenters for a well-established commercial construction contractor with a strong and growing presence in Northern Michigan. This company specializes in interior and exterior finish work on commercial buildings — framing, drywall, acoustical ceilings, and flooring — and has a track record of long-term careers, not just jobs. This is a true direct-hire opportunity, not a temporary assignment.
Whether you're new to the trade and ready to learn or you're an experienced commercial carpenter looking for your next long-term home, there's a path for you here. The company actively backfills retirements and has ongoing openings, cross-trains its crews across multiple skill areas, and offers a built-in apprenticeship path for those starting out. If you're willing to learn, self-motivated, and comfortable working at heights, this could be a great fit.
What You'll Be Doing
- Exterior and interior framing on commercial job sites
- Hanging and finishing drywall
- Installing acoustical and specialty ceilings
- Flooring installation
- Working from boom lifts and mobile (Baker) scaffolding, with occasional leading-edge roof work to attach framing to steel
- Cross-training across multiple scopes of work as you grow with the team
(This role does not include mechanical, electrical, plumbing, concrete, HVAC, painting, or demolition work.)
What We're Looking For
Required:
- Willingness to learn and take direction — this is the #1 trait the employer looks for
- Comfortable working at heights
- Self-motivated and able to work well on varied job sites
- Flexibility with commute/travel to project sites outside Traverse City as needed
Preferred (not required):
- 2+ years of commercial carpentry experience
- Experience across multiple job sites
- OSHA 10 or 30
- Aerial/scissor lift and scaffolding training
- Rigging experience
- Lead and asbestos awareness training
- CPR/AED certification
- Ladder and aerial lift training
- Powder-actuated tool experience
No formal carpentry background is required — training and cross-training are built into the role.
Benefits May Include
- Full health insurance package, including medical (5 plan options), dental, and vision coverage
- Health Savings Account (HSA) and Flexible Spending Account (FSA) options
- 401(k) with company match, annual profit sharing, and quarterly bonuses
- Paid Time Off, accruing from day one (available to use after a short waiting period)
- 8 paid company holidays (after 30 days for hourly employees)
- Company-provided uniforms, with an annual uniform store and periodic Carhartt gear or boot gift cards
- All safety gear and most power tools provided, including a fitted hard hat and personal harness
- Employer-paid short-term disability and Employee Assistance Program access
- Paid continuing education and company team-building events
(Bring your own hand tools — everything else is provided.)
Why You'll Love This Opportunity
- Real earning growth: $20/hr to start, up to $34–36/hr with experience
- True direct-hire career, not a temp assignment
- Built-in apprenticeship path for those starting out
- Strong, comprehensive benefits from day one
- Steady, ongoing work — this employer is actively growing its Northern Michigan team
- Learn multiple trade skills through cross-training
- Consistent Monday–Friday schedule with occasional three-day weekends on out-of-town projects
Real Talk
This is physical, hands-on work. You'll be comfortable on boom lifts and scaffolding, and there is occasional roof-level work attaching framing to steel — heights are part of the job. Some projects will require travel outside the Traverse City area, including potential Upper Peninsula work. The pace and scope of work can vary by job site, and the company genuinely wants people who are willing to keep learning and cross-train into new skills — that mindset matters more than a specific resume.
