Job Description

Mechanical Designer
Neenah, Wisconsin

Company Overview
Nercon has designed and built conveyor and material handling systems for Fortune 500 consumer packaged goods companies since 1976, serving brands in coffee, juice, household cleaning products, snack foods, and more. Nercon is a family-owned business, now led by its second generation, and it continues to reinvest in its people, its technology, and its plant.

Nercon operates two Wisconsin facilities: a corporate office in Neenah and a 100,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in Oconto, where the team cuts and welds its own steel and runs its own CNC routers and test floor. Roughly 110 people work across the two sites. Nercon's standardized ProCore product family lets the team move quickly on proven conveyor designs, while a custom side of the business, from sanitary conveyors to fully engineered systems, keeps the work varied and interesting.

Role Overview
The Mechanical Designer helps design packaging and process conveyor systems and material handling equipment, working from Nercon's ProCore product families as well as custom builds. You'll take projects from rough sketches through plan and elevation views, detail drawings, bills of material, and Release to Manufacturing documentation that Nercon's own Oconto shop builds from.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on design work, wants to learn from an experienced and collaborative engineering team, and is excited to see their designs come to life on the shop floor.

Success in this role is measured by:

  • Accurate, complete drawings and bills of material that hold up through fabrication and assembly
  • Growing fluency in Nercon's ProCore design standards and drawing conventions
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at a time and keep them moving on schedule
  • Clear communication with teammates, Sales, and the manufacturing team
  • Steadily taking on larger and more complex projects over time

Why This Role Exists
Nercon's engineering group is actively growing, building out its design teams to support continued customer demand. This role exists to:

  • Add design capacity to a team that is expanding
  • Support both standardized ProCore work and fully custom equipment
  • Help projects move smoothly from design through manufacturing
  • Grow alongside a tenured team that is genuinely open to new ideas

Core Responsibilities

Design & Documentation:

  • Develop plan and elevation views, cross sections, and detail drawings
  • Build complete mechanical bills of material for assigned projects
  • Apply Nercon's ProCore design standards and drawing conventions
  • Contribute to custom equipment designs alongside senior team members

Cross-Functional Collaboration:

  • Work with Sales and Application Engineering to understand project scope
  • Participate in customer design reviews and Factory Acceptance Testing as projects require
  • Partner with fabrication and assembly teams to see designs through to completion

Manufacturing Support:

  • Produce Release to Manufacturing documentation
  • Support detail engineering, fabrication, assembly, and final testing at the Oconto plant
  • Help resolve design questions that come up on the shop floor

Process Improvement:

  • Take part in ongoing process improvement conversations
  • Share ideas for better ways to work across the design team

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field (Associate Degree with relevant experience considered)
  • Mechanical design experience through professional work, internships, co-ops, or coursework
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks (2024 or higher)
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel)
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record
  • Ability to travel occasionally (about 5%) to customer sites or the Oconto plant

Preferred Background

  • Experience with DriveWorks
  • Exposure to conveyor, packaging, or material handling equipment design
  • Familiarity with fabrication or manufacturing environments

Success Traits (What “Great” Looks Like)

  • Clear communicator who keeps teammates and partners aligned
  • Team-oriented, enjoys sharing ideas rather than working alone
  • Curious and eager to learn, open to feedback and coaching
  • Adaptable, comfortable moving between standard designs and one-off custom builds
  • Detail-oriented with strong follow-through

Why Join Nercon

  • Real Variety: Standardized ProCore lines and true custom builds, never just one or the other
  • Hands-On Impact: See your designs fabricated, assembled, and tested in Nercon's own plant
  • Family-Owned Culture: A short chain of communication and a team that listens
  • Room to Grow: A growing engineering group with space to take on bigger projects over time
  • Total Rewards: HSA-eligible health plan, dental, vision, 401(k) with match plus profit sharing, tuition reimbursement and vacation time
  • On-Site Collaboration: Based in Neenah, working side by side with an experienced design team
