Job Description

This role is a hands-on production position in a heavy industrial joist shop, focused on operating weld and laser machines, assembling structural steel joists, and supporting overall manufacturing operations. You will learn to run specialized equipment, participate in welding training, and work as part of an assembly line team to ensure joists are produced safely, accurately, and on schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Operate weld machines to assemble structural steel joists according to production requirements.
  • Monitor machinery continuously to ensure it is functioning correctly and safely, and report any issues promptly.
  • Work on an assembly line in a team environment to meet daily production goals and get joists out on time.
  • Read and interpret schematics and drawings to assemble joists accurately and to specification.
  • Learn and operate welding equipment after completing initial machinery training and welding class.
  • Operate laser machines and other shop machinery as needed to support production.
  • Perform general labor tasks such as cleaning and sweeping work areas to maintain a safe and organized shop.
  • Handle materials as needed, including moving and positioning steel components for assembly.
  • Perform touch-up painting using standard methods (no spray painting) on finished or in-process parts as required.
  • Use hand tools and tape measures to check dimensions, align components, and verify accuracy of assemblies.
  • Follow all safety procedures, including completing safety training before operating machinery and using required protective equipment.
  • Maintain reliable attendance and punctuality to support continuous production operations.
  • Adapt to working in a loud, dirty, and heavy industrial environment with exposure to metal, dust, and temperature extremes.

Essential Skills

  • Ability to perform physically demanding general labor in a heavy industrial manufacturing environment.
  • Comfort operating machinery after training, including weld machines and other production equipment.
  • Ability to read and understand basic schematics or drawings for assembly work.
  • Experience or schooling in a trade or industrial environment, such as welding, mechanical, or related fields.
  • Strong reliability and attendance, with a commitment to meeting scheduled shifts and mandatory overtime.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of an assembly line team and follow instructions from supervisors.
  • Willingness and ability to work in a dirty environment with loud noises, metal dust, and fluctuating temperatures.
  • Basic ability to use hand tools and a tape measure accurately.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Any experience with MIG, TIG, or Stick welding is a significant plus.
  • Any prior welding or mechanical experience is highly valued.
  • Comfort performing material handling tasks, including moving and positioning steel components.
  • Ability to perform cleaning, sweeping, and general shop maintenance as needed.
  • Willingness to complete safety training and welding class provided by the employer.
  • Interest in working in structural steel fabrication, bridge work, or heavy industrial manufacturing.

Why Work Here?
