Job Description
Principal Positioning Algorithms Engineer

Principal Positioning Algorithms Engineer

Position Overview
We are seeking a Principal Positioning Algorithms Engineer to lead the research, design, and deployment of high-performance positioning and PNT (position, navigation, and timing) solutions across wireless systems. You will drive algorithm architecture and innovation for GNSS and cellular (LTE, 5G NR) based positioning, develop robust sensor fusion and signal processing techniques, and partner with cross-functional teams to deliver production ready systems. This role combines deep technical leadership with hands-on prototyping, evaluation, and mentorship to advance the company's positioning capabilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the end-to-end design and development of positioning algorithms (GNSS, LTE, 5G NR) including ToA/TDoA, AoA, RTT, fingerprinting, and hybrid/sensor fusion approaches.
  • Architect and implement advanced signal processing and estimation methods (Kalman filters, particle filters, Bayesian inference, MLE) for robust real world performance.
  • Drive research and prototyping of algorithms for multipath mitigation, antenna array processing, and high accuracy techniques (RTK, PPP where applicable).
  • Design and execute simulation campaigns and field tests to validate algorithms under diverse propagation and mobility scenarios; analyze results and iterate on designs.
  • Collaborate closely with system architects, RF engineers, firmware/software teams, and product management to integrate algorithms into real time products and reference designs.
  • Optimize algorithm implementations for embedded/real time platforms
  • Define and maintain clear metrics, test plans, and performance benchmarks; lead tuning and calibration efforts for deployments.
  • Contribute to standards activities, technical publications, patents, and internal knowledge sharing to influence industry approaches to wireless positioning.
  • Mentor and grow a team of algorithm and signal processing engineers; provide technical guidance, code reviews, and career development support.
  • Work with customers, partners, and test teams to troubleshoot field issues, provide technical support, and translate application needs into algorithm requirements.

Qualifications

  • MS or BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or related field; PhD preferred for research intensive roles.
  • 6+ years of professional experience in positioning algorithms or related signal processing fields, with a proven track record of shipping products or leading successful research projects.
  • Deep domain expertise in GNSS receiver algorithms and architecture and/or cellular positioning (LTE, 5G NR) including relevant measurement types (ToA, TDoA, RTT, AoA, RSRP/RSRP fingerprinting).
  • Strong foundation in estimation theory and statistical signal processing (Kalman/extended/unscented filters, particle filters, MLE, MAP, hypothesis testing).
  • Hands-on experience with sensor fusion (IMU, barometer, magnetometer) and multi sensor integration for PNT solutions.
  • Proficient in algorithm development and prototyping with MATLAB/Simulink and Python; production coding experience in C or C++ for embedded/real time systems.
  • Experience with RF propagation, multipath modeling, array signal processing, and channel measurement/test methodologies.
  • Familiarity with 3GPP positioning features and standards, and practical experience integrating with LTE/5G stacks is highly desirable.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration abilities, and experience mentoring engineers.
  • Publication or patent record in positioning, navigation, or wireless communications is a plus, as is experience with cloud-based evaluation and CI/CD for algorithm development.
