Job Title: CNC Machinist 1st, 2nd & 3rd Shift

Job Description

This role is ideal for an experienced CNC Machinist who enjoys complex 3-axis and 5-axis machining, precise setups, and high-tolerance work in a fast-paced production environment. You will set up, qualify, and operate both manual and CNC machines, working with advanced equipment and controls to produce high-quality components for automotive, aerospace, energy, chemical, and environmental applications. Multiple openings are available on 2nd and 3rd shift, with shift premiums and ample voluntary overtime.

Responsibilities

  • Set up CNC machines using methods that involve edge finders and indicators to ensure accurate and repeatable positioning.
  • Perform first-piece qualification through detailed inspections, fine-tune machine settings, and verify that parts meet close and exacting tolerances and high-resolution aesthetic requirements.
  • Operate a variety of equipment including 3-axis mills (such as Fadal, Okuma, Makino, and Mazak) and 5-axis machines (such as Hurco and Mikron), as well as manual machines when needed.
  • Work with multiple CNC controllers including Heidenhain, Fanuc, Okuma, Hurco, Makino Pro 5 and Pro 6, and Fadal to run programs and adjust offsets.
  • Enter machining instructions and programs into CNC equipment based on information provided by programmers and production documentation.
  • Set up CNC equipment with the correct attachments, tooling, and workholding to perform each job safely and efficiently.
  • Operate and monitor CNC machines, including running multiple machines at a time while maintaining quality and throughput.
  • Troubleshoot issues related to machine programming, tooling, and setup, and make appropriate adjustments to maintain part quality and productivity.
  • Collect data from blueprints, plans, work orders, and other sources to complete inspection sheets and production documentation, following ISO 9001 practices where applicable.
  • Inspect parts using calipers, micrometers, depth micrometers, gage pins, and other precision measuring tools to confirm compliance with specifications.
  • Perform routine inspection and preventive maintenance (PMP) duties on equipment to ensure reliable operation and minimize downtime.
  • Follow all safety procedures and regulations while maintaining a clean and organized work area.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers, management, and other team members to resolve issues, improve processes, and meet production goals.
  • Apply knowledge of GD&T, decimal systems, G and M codes, and CNC machining principles to interpret drawings and programs correctly.
  • Use CMM equipment or work with CMM results when required to verify complex dimensions and tolerances.
  • Follow work instructions accurately and consistently, demonstrating strong attention to detail and good listening skills.
  • Support high-volume production in a large machining shop environment, contributing to continuous improvement and quality initiatives.

Essential Skills

  • 310 years of CNC machining experience, including setup and operation of 3-axis and 5-axis CNC machines.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and work instructions.
  • Proven capability to set up your own machine and inspect parts to verify conformance to specifications.
  • Hands-on experience with both manual machining and CNC machining operations.
  • Working knowledge of Mastercam and CAD/CAM systems for CNC programming or program verification.
  • Experience with G and M codes and practical understanding of CNC programming fundamentals.
  • Knowledge and experience in 3-axis and 5-axis CNC machining, including tooling selection and workholding.
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001 quality systems and completing inspection sheets and related documentation.
  • Ability to enter and adjust instructions in CNC equipment based on programmer-provided data and production requirements.
  • Experience operating and monitoring multiple CNC machines simultaneously while maintaining quality and safety.
  • Troubleshooting skills for machine programming, tooling, and setup issues.
  • CMM familiarity or knowledge for dimensional inspection of complex parts.
  • Proficiency using precision measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, depth micrometers, and gage pins.
  • Knowledge of different tooling types including end mills, bullnose cutters, ballnose cutters, chamfer mills, drills, and related tooling.
  • Understanding of GD&T and decimal systems for accurate interpretation of dimensions and tolerances.
  • Ability to follow safety procedures and regulations consistently in a production environment.
  • Strong attention to detail, good listening skills, and the ability to follow work instructions precisely.
  • Team-oriented mindset with willingness to collaborate with engineers, management, and other team members.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Completion of a trade school program in machining or a related technical field.
  • At least 5 years of machinist experience in a production or precision machining environment.
  • Experience in aerospace and defense machining, particularly with close-tolerance and high-specification components.
  • Familiarity with equipment and controls from manufacturers such as Okuma, Makino, Mazak, Hurco, Fadal, and Mikron.
  • Experience working with chemical, automotive, aerospace, energy, and environmental industry components.
  • Comfort working with advanced CNC controllers including Heidenhain, Fanuc, Okuma, Hurco, and Makino Pro 5/Pro 6.
  • Lathe experience and broader machining background beyond milling is beneficial.
  • Knowledge of process machining in high-volume production environments.
