Job Description

The Mechanical Drafter/Designer & Tooling Coordinator supports manufacturing operations by managing tooling, gauges, fixtures, and related production equipment, while also creating and revising detailed 2D and 3D CAD drawings. This role ensures tooling availability, inventory accuracy, and production readiness through organized tooling management and precise technical documentation. The position combines hands-on production support with drafting responsibilities and requires strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and manage tool crib inventory, including tooling, fixtures, gauges, hardware, and related production supplies to support ongoing production needs.
  • Purchase, receive, organize, and store tooling and production support materials in a secure and orderly manner.
  • Monitor inventory levels and coordinate replenishment activities to ensure uninterrupted production and timely availability of tooling and supplies.
  • Prepare, stage, and distribute tooling and materials for scheduled production runs, ensuring that all required items are available and properly documented.
  • Communicate tooling shortages, inventory concerns, and availability issues clearly and promptly to production leadership.
  • Maintain accurate records for tooling, dies, and equipment entering or leaving the facility to ensure traceability and inventory control.
  • Ensure the tool crib remains secure, organized, and compliant with company standards and established procedures.
  • Create and maintain accurate 2D and 3D CAD drawings for dies, tooling, equipment, assemblies, and fabricated components.
  • Develop detailed drawings from sketches, layouts, existing CAD files, fabricated parts, and verbal or written instructions.
  • Revise drawings based on engineering change requests, marked-up prints, and evolving production requirements.
  • Apply drafting standards, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) principles, and established engineering practices to all drawings and revisions.
  • Perform calculations involving geometry, trigonometry, and algebra to support tooling design and manufacturing processes.
  • Follow safe work practices and keep the work area clean, organized, and compliant with safety guidelines.
  • Adhere to documented policies and procedures as designated by the Employee Handbook and Local Work Rules, including the appropriate Code of Conduct while on company property.
  • Perform related duties as assigned to support manufacturing, tooling, and documentation activities.

Essential Skills

  • 0-2 years of experience in drafting, tooling, manufacturing, or a closely related field.
  • Proficiency with 2D and 3D CAD software, with SolidWorks experience strongly emphasized.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings accurately.
  • Working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and its application to tooling and component drawings.
  • Strong organizational skills with proven ability to manage inventory and maintain accurate records.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills for collaborating with production leadership and other team members.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines in a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in both drafting and inventory management tasks.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Mechanical Drafting, CAD Technology, or a related technical field is preferred.
  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment is preferred.

Work Environment

This role operates in a manufacturing environment that combines office-based CAD work with hands-on interaction in the tool crib and production areas. The typical schedule consists of 10-hour workdays from Monday through Thursday and an 8-hour workday on Friday (current schedule). The position involves working around production equipment, tooling, and fabricated components, requiring adherence to safety practices and maintaining a clean and organized workspace. Collaboration with production leadership and other team members is frequent, and the environment values reliability, precision, and a proactive approach to supporting manufacturing operations.
