Job Title: Staff Accountant

Location: Vienna, VA

Duration: 3 Months Contract + High Possibilities of Extension

Pay rate: $75.00-$95.00/hr.

Work Arrangement: Hybrid (3 days per week in office)

Job description:

• We are seeking a highly analytical and detail-oriented Staff Accountant to support accounting and financial reporting activities for non-utility power and gas businesses.
• This role is responsible for monthly close activities, account reconciliations, financial analysis, due diligence, audit support, and financial reporting while ensuring compliance with GAAP and internal controls.
• The successful candidate will have excellent analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills and be able to quickly integrate into the team and contribute immediately.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform day-to-day accounting functions for power and gas operations and affiliated entities.
• Prepare, review, and post journal entries while supporting monthly, quarterly, and year-end close activities.
• Complete account reconciliations in BlackLine, including accounts receivable and other balance sheet accounts.
• Analyze and explain variances between actual results, budgets, and forecasts.
• Participate in monthly financial review and due diligence meetings.
• Work closely with business partners to record, analyze, and report power and gas revenue and cost accounts, including renewable energy credits.
• Support consolidation activities, ownership accounting, and elimination entries.
• Assist with financial statement preparation, regulatory reporting, and external audit requests.
• Research and assess the accounting impact of new business transactions, contracts, and organizational structures.
• Ensure compliance with SOX requirements, internal controls, and accounting policies.
• Identify opportunities for process improvements and support the implementation of enhanced accounting workflows and systems.
• Utilize financial and operational data to identify trends, explain results, and support business decision-making.
• Prepare deliverables for monthly and quarterly reporting, due diligence reviews, and financial statement review meetings.
• Maintain effective relationships with finance, operational teams, and business stakeholders.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related business discipline.
• 5+ years of progressive accounting or financial reporting experience.
• Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial accounting principles.
• Experience preparing journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial analysis.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• High degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
• Ability to quickly learn new systems and processes.

Preferred Qualifications

• CPA designation.
• MBA with a concentration in Accounting.
• Public accounting experience supporting public-company clients.
• Utility, power, or energy industry experience.
• Experience with PeopleSoft Financials (General Ledger, Fixed Assets, Projects).
• Experience with BlackLine and financial close management tools.
• Experience with consolidations, partnership accounting, and complex ownership structures.
