About this job
This role supports the production of large structural and architectural precast concrete forms used in projects such as parking garages, grocery stores, apartment buildings, and other commercial structures. You will help build and prepare steel and wooden molds, handle concrete placement and finishing, and perform general labor tasks that keep the plant operating efficiently. The work focuses on manufacturing concrete forms in a plant environment; construction and installation at the job site are handled by others.
Responsibilities- Build and assemble steel and wooden frames (molds) for precast concrete based on blueprints and piece drawings.
- Use hand tools and power tools to assist carpenters in constructing wooden forms for concrete pours.
- Assist in installing steel components and frames that are part of the wooden forms prior to concrete pouring.
- Retrieve and move materials such as mesh sheets (often up to 100 pounds as a two-person lift), rebar, wire, nuts, and bolts to the appropriate workstations for form building.
- Set up equipment used for casting bands and architectural finishes according to specifications.
- Lay out the casting bed with accurate dimensions based on each piece drawing and the overall bed length.
- Set up the casting bed according to specifications, including all form side reveals and bottom steel or plates.
- Ensure proper placement of concrete on the bed to match the piece drawings and design requirements.
- Monitor bed heat using a computer system and adjust as needed to support proper curing.
- Assist with concrete pours by helping direct concrete into the molds within the plant.
- Smooth and finish concrete surfaces using brooms, levels, screeds, and laser screeds to achieve the required finish.
- Wash exposed aggregate on panels and full beds to achieve the specified appearance.
- Place dunnage correctly under finished products in the yard to protect panels and support safe storage.
- Grind the ends of panels and clean pallets and beds to prepare for subsequent pours.
- Scrape, clean, and oil side forms and chamfers to ensure they are ready for reuse.
- Perform general labor tasks such as sweeping, cleaning off wooden forms, and maintaining a clean and organized work area.
- Assist in getting the plant up and running each day and support continuous production throughout the shift.
- Follow all safety procedures and use tools and equipment in a safe and responsible manner.
- Collaborate with team members and follow instructions from supervisors to meet production schedules and quality standards.
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude with experience using power tools and hand tools.
- Previous labor experience in a physically demanding environment.
- Ability to accurately read and use a tape measure.
- Capability to lift and move heavy materials, including working with a partner to lift items around 100 pounds.
- Ability to follow blueprints, piece drawings, and written or verbal instructions for form setup and layout.
- Comfort working in a production or construction-type environment with varying tasks throughout the day.
- Reliability in maintaining consistent attendance and working full scheduled shifts.
- Flexibility to work varying end times based on production needs.
- Professional construction experience in areas such as carpentry, concrete work, demolition, or framing is preferred.
- Experience reading and interpreting blueprints is preferred.
- Familiarity with precast concrete production or concrete finishing is an advantage.
- Experience using equipment such as screeds and laser screeds is beneficial.
- Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
- Reliable transportation to and from the worksite.
You will join a production team that plays a key role in creating large-scale structural and architectural components used in high-visibility projects across many industries. The work offers steady hours with opportunities for overtime, as well as the chance to build valuable, transferable skills in precast concrete, construction methods, and industrial production. You will work with experienced tradespeople, gain hands-on experience with specialized equipment, and contribute to tangible projects that you can see in the community.
Work EnvironmentThis is a plant-based role in a precast concrete manufacturing facility. The environment is physically demanding, with significant standing, bending, lifting, and moving materials throughout the shift. The facility does not have heating or air conditioning, so it can be very cold in the winter and hot in the summer. The work area is typically dusty and dirty due to concrete production and general construction activities. You will work with hand tools, power tools, concrete finishing tools, and equipment such as screeds and laser screeds. Standard hours are generally between 5:007:00 AM and 3:005:00 PM, Monday through Friday, with occasional Saturdays as production requires, for an expected 4046 hours per week. Clothing should be appropriate for a construction and industrial environment, with durable workwear and footwear suitable for a dirty, heavy-duty setting.
