Discover Home Loans is looking for an energetic, hard-working Underwriter I to join our team!

The responsibilities of the Underwriter I include, but are not limited to:

• Disburse and log all loan submissions to the underwriting department; Reviews incoming loan files within twenty-four (24) hours of receipt
• Underwrites residential loans; reviews loan-to-value ratios, credit reports, applications and appraisals to ensure that each loan meets the secondary marketing guidelines.
• Identifies alternate financing solutions (as necessary) or escalates loan files to Underwriting Lead/Manager for second-level review; Works with Sales and Processing agents to negotiate alternatives with customers.
• Communicates suspense/re-work requirements to Processors after second-level reviews by Underwriting Manager.
• Run DISSCO, Assetwise and any other automated systems as required by investor; Updates system status as needed.
• Assist Underwriting Managers and Team Leads with miscellaneous duties.
• Submitting and following up on exception requests and prior approvals with the investor

Qualifications

A successful candidate will have the following skills and experience:

Experience / Training / Education:

• 0-1 years related experience and training in underwriting residential loans
• Any similar combination of education and experience

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

• Thorough working knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices and procedures within underwriting field
• Strong knowledge of Internet loan origination for mortgage and/or home equity loans, knowledge of all internal products
• Effective oral and written communication skills; Excellent interpersonal skills
• Computer skills: intermediate MS Word, intermediate MS Excel, intermediate MS Outlook, intermediate MS Access, intermediate knowledge of Internet.
• Basic knowledge of Automated Underwriting Systems, such as DU/DO; LP;
• Ability to work under pressure of multiple projects and deadlines; Ability to effectively prioritize workload and manage changes in direction
• Ability to interpret and apply required policies and procedures
• Ability to work in a team environment
• Prior experience in mortgage industry strongly preferred
