Qualifications:

Education: Requires a High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)

Prefer Technical School Certification or coursework in production engineering or related area

Experience: Requires up to one (1) year of related work experience in a feed mill and/or manufacturing environment, and experience operating a fork lift and production machinery.

Previous Southern States work experience a plus.

Work Environment

The Sacking Operator primarily performs essential job functions in an indoor environment that is not climate controlled and experiences temperature and humidity swings. Job functions are also occasionally performed in an outdoor environment which may not be protected from weather conditions. Must utilize stairs to work on elevated floors and mezzanines. Must operate and ride an open lift or small enclosed elevator, depending on location, to access floors in the tower. May be required to perform work in confined spaces, such as when cleaning the bagging hopper.

The Sacking Operator is frequently exposed to hazards including:
  • Moving mechanical parts and vehicles
  • Noise levels where hearing protection is optional per PPE Plan
  • Dust, odors, and chemicals associated with the production of feed
  • Electrical current, vibrations, fumes, lubricants and wet surfaces associated with the production, packaging, warehousing, and distribution of product


The Sacking Operator primarily works an 8 hour shift Monday - Friday where overtime is required. Must be able to work an alternate shift, schedule or weekend as determined by business need. Ability to report to work in adverse weather conditions is required.

Physical Activities & Requirements

While performing the essential job functions of this position, the Sacking Operator is required to:
  • Continuouslybalance; stand and walk on concrete and grated metal flooring; turn and twist head/neck and waist/back. Pull, push, lift, carry 10-55 pounds unassisted.
  • Frequently bend, climb, crouch, kneel, stack, stoop, reach with arms and hands; drive forklifts and utilize eye/hand/foot coordination; use hands and feet in repetitive motion; finger and handle. Pull, push, lift, carry 55-80 pounds, may be assisted.
  • Occasionally sit, shovel and sweep. Pull, push, lift, carry 80- 100 pounds, may be assisted.


Must be able to hear equipment sounds, mill pages, co-workers and radio. Must be able to speak to co-workers regarding production and safety. Must be able to utilize sense of smell to identify quality issues with ingredients and feed products. Specific vision abilities required by this job include: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Tools & Equipment

Hard hat, steel toed shoes required. Able to operate a fork lift, pallet jack, and hand truck. Able to utilize a handheld scanner, stretch wrap machine, scale, computer, printer, copier, calculator, manuals and forms, writing instrument, telephone, and intercom.

Job Description:

General Summary

The Sacking Operator operates automated packaging equipment and computerized controls to ensure bags are properly filled with product, sewn, tagged and date coded, and routed for storage or delivery. Must adhere to established policies and procedures. Performs work under general supervision.

Essential Job Functions
  • Coordinate daily sacking operations with mill management leading team members to optimize production and to ensure maximum up time on the sacking line. Work efficiently to minimize line change over and any issues relating to delays or downtime.
  • At the start of each shift and throughout daily production, organize team efforts to check and expedite sacking production line setups, including: automated controls, source bin verification, tagging, and empty bags. Provide guidance to the sacking team members and monitor sacking production for maximum plant efficiency and quality control compliance.
  • Operate automated and manual systems used in controlling packaging equipment, routing, liquid blending, and feed screening.
  • Check to ensure proper paper bags and feed tags match the products being packaged. Verify that bags are consistently filled to accurate weight. Ensure sewing/closing system is operating properly by checking finished packages for closure integrity and proper tag placement.
  • Operate forklifts as needed.
  • Follow Current Good Manufacturing Practices (CGMP), Quality Control (QC) and established plant procedures to acquire retained samples, to set off bags at start up and run end, to maintain bag weights and to monitor and ensure product and package quality. Immediately notify QC Supervisor of any suspected problem with quality or quantity conditions. Regularly review QC Manual bulletins and comply with requirements.
  • Complete and maintain automated system data entry, assigned written reports, logs, and related documents for the sacking operation accurately and in a timely manner according to standard operating procedures for documentation. Ensure sacking team members complete and maintain required documentation.
  • Maintain clean and orderly work area by keeping tools and equipment in proper places and all materials off the floor. Utilize safety procedures for accessing equipment (lock out / tag out), and ensure all restart procedures are followed. Ensure all equipment covers are replaced correctly and sealed to control dust. Properly dispose of waste material. Be proactive with cleaning efforts as facility may receive non-company personnel. Follow all requirements of mill Housekeeping Plan, Quality Control and HACCP Plans.
  • Perform assigned routine preventative maintenance and assist maintenance mechanics as required. Report equipment maintenance needs to supervisor.
  • Work safely as to not cause harm to yourself, co-workers, equipment, or inventory. Utilize Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required per mill PPE plan. Comply with OSHA regulations, Southern States Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) standards, work rules and policies.
  • Perform all other job functions as assigned.
