About this job

The Physician Assistant (PA) provides diagnostic, therapeutic and preventive health-care services to SMBHS patients under the supervision of the psychiatrist and physician.

The Physician Assistant records patient history, physical, and mental health examinations reviews and interprets lab and other diagnostic test data orders appropriate treatments, medications and diagnostic studies and provides patient education. Counsels patients on medical problems, use of drugs, expected effects of treatment, child care, diet, and other therapeutic health maintenance matters. Makes entries in patient's permanent medical records. In emergency situations, administers lifesaving procedures and medications pending availability of physician. The PA also responds to inquiries from referring physicians, hospital staff and patients regarding the diagnosis and treatment of conditions as well as eligibility for research protocols. Performs other duties as assigned.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

Knowledge of the information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat behavioral health illnesses, human injuries, diseases, and deformities. This includes symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions, and preventive health-care measures. Excellent communication skills, ability to ask questions and gain information from patients needed to diagnose and treat health conditions. Ability to convey patient behavior and status verbally and in writing. Professional verbal and written skills. Able to verbally adapt spoken communication to meet needs of client. Maintains professional therapeutic relationships with internal and external customers. Able to maintain patient confidentiality. Knowledge of human behavior and performance individual differences in ability, personality, and interests learning and motivation psychological research methods and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders. Ability to safely manage a dangerous and aggressive patient, to verbally communicate to de-escalate a crisis situation, and to protect self and others from aggressive patients or other accidents. Ability to handle multiple projects and tasks under deadlines and with short notice.

Education/Training:

Graduation from a physician assistant educational program, accredited by the Accreditation Review Committee on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or its predecessors, at a college, university, or accredited educational institution. Successful completion of the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) examination must maintain status as a certified physician assistant, including completion of all requirements for continuing medical education (CME) and re-certification.

Licensure/Certification:

National certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician. Every 2 years, PAs must earn and log 100 CME hours and reregister the certificate with the NCCPA (second and fourth years), and, by the end of the sixth year, recertify by successfully completing the Physician Assistant National Recertifying Examination (PANRE).

Experience:

Prefer two years work experience in a psychiatric hospital.

Able to deal with stressful situations and changing priorities. Ability to enter data into computer, word processing. Able to lift, carry, and lower up to 35 pounds using appropriate body mechanics. Access to reliable transportation maintains reliable attendance record and arrives in a timely manner.

Conditions of Employment:

Satisfactory reference and background investigation checks. Criminal charges or convictions that occur while employed with SMBHS must be reported within 24 hours to Human Resources. Completion of a pre-employment drug screening and completion of post-employment drug or alcohol tests upon reasonable suspicion of use. Completion of ALL required paperwork prior to reporting for work. Completion of pre-employment physical, proof of Rubella inoculation, TB screening upon hire and annually thereafter, complete or waive HBV series. Successful completion of initial 30-day job orientation and competency assessment period. Maintains current certification in CPR and First Aid. Maintains patient behavioral crisis prevention certification every six months. Attendance at all mandatory staff development and training

Work Environment:

Exposure to potentially aggressive patients. Job stress ranges from low to intense. Category II - Tasks that rarely involve exposure to blood or body fluids. Non-smoking work environment. Drug free workplace.
