Position Summary: The Category Manager – Cigarettes is responsible for maximizing category sales, profitability, and market share within the cigarette portfolio. This role requires strong analytical and commercial acumen to develop and execute category strategies that balance consumer demand, regulatory constraints, and competitive dynamics. The Category Manager will oversee assortment, pricing, promotion, and merchandising, while partnering closely with suppliers, internal stakeholders, and field teams to drive performance and ensure compliance.
Responsibilities:
1. Category Strategy & Planning
a. Develop and implement strategic plans to optimize sales, margin, and share for the cigarette category.
b. Maximize sales and profitability by refining assortment strategies, negotiating space allocations, and ensuring alignment with customer demand and market trends.
c. Balance short-term revenue growth with long-term sustainability, accounting for regulatory and consumer trends.
d. Identify and initiate development of private label opportunities where relevant.
e. Drive growth by identifying and launching new product opportunities, leveraging supplier partnerships to bring innovation to market.
2. Product Assortment & Merchandising
a. Manage product assortment, ensuring relevance, compliance, and profitability.
b. Lead planogram development and space optimization to drive customer engagement and sales.
c. Identify and evaluate new product opportunities and innovation within the category.
d. Follow all established processes for new and discontinued items, recommending improvements as needed.
3. Pricing & Promotion
a. Develop pricing strategies that adhere to state and federal regulations while maximizing profitability and competitiveness.
b. Strengthen category performance through strategic pricing, vendor selections, and execution of key projects, including the 99 Bottles program.
c. Evaluate promotional effectiveness across in-store, loyalty, and digital platforms to improve ROI.
d. Partner with suppliers on contract negotiations, rebates, and promotional funding.
e. Ensure all promotional deadlines are met and accounting processes are followed.
4. Analytics & Insights
a. Monitor category performance against KPIs, including sales, margin, volume and share.
b. Leverage consumer insights, loyalty data, and market research to inform decisions.
c. Provide clear reporting and actionable recommendations to leadership.
d. Improve in-stock levels and reduce waste by overseeing CAO accuracy, DSI performance, product returns, and shrink management initiatives.
5. Cross-Functional Collaboration
a. Partner with Legal, Compliance, and Regulatory Affairs to ensure all category activities adhere to evolving laws and policies.
b. Collaborate with Marketing, Field Operations, and Supply Chain to deliver seamless execution at retail.
c. Build and maintain strong vendor relationships to secure competitive advantage and program support.
d. Actively engage with industry associations, key suppliers, and stakeholders in the Tobacco & Nicotine space to anticipate market shifts and regulatory changes.
6. Process Development & Documentation
a. Lead process development and documentation efforts to standardize category management execution.
b. Ensure consistent adherence to regulatory, contractual, and financial commitments across the category.

INTERNAL: Within Marketing: Direct and Indirect Reports; Advertising Team; POS/Price Book Team; Merchandising/Planogram Team Within Store Support Center: IT Department; Legal Department; Strategic Sourcing; Finance Team; Supply Chain/Warehouse Team, Retail Operations Team: Retail Vice President’s; Regional Manager’s; District Manager’s, Store Managers EXTERNAL: Direct Vendors, Brokers, Distributors (especially for DSD categories)
Requirements
Minimum Education: HS Diploma or GED
Preferred Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing Preferred
Minimum Experience: Category Management or Related; Negotiation; Marketing; Retail Experience; Track record of developing category strategy and success in implementing marketing and merchandising programs in a retail environment.
Preferred Experience: 5 years Category Management experience

Travel: 25% - 50%
Hours & Conditions: Working remotely Monday – Friday for 8+ Hours Per Day. Working from the SCC at least one week per month.
Physical Requirements: Minimal physical effort required; sitting / standing at computer for long periods of time. Ability to maneuver and lift up to 10 lbs.
