Responsibilities

Performs moderately complex network designs using existing technology. Plans network configurations for integration into the network, using knowledge of the performance characteristics of the systems being added to the network and the specifications for network interfaces to insure effective integration and optimal network performance. Incumbents prepare technical proposals for presentation to the engineering review boards to add new technologies to the network.

With limited guidance, performs moderately complex O&M activities. Utilize network analysis tools to identify performance problems in the network.  Incumbents follow trouble shooting procedures for restoring the network to optimal performance levels. They assist senior technical staff in preparing troubleshooting procedures for restoring tile network to optimal performance levels.

With limited guidance, performs routine to moderately complex network upgrades. Reviews user requests for upgrades or additions to the network to assess impact on network performance and provides advice and guidance on the most practical! technical approach to meeting user requirements. Plans upgrades to existing network configurations, using knowledge of the performance characteristics of the systems being upgraded and the specifications for network interfaces to insure effective integration and optimal network performance. Incumbents prepare technical proposals for presentation to the engineering review boards for upgrading existing technologies.

The candidate shall:

  • Perform network engineering on specific sensitive Sponsor mission systems. The candidate shall diagnose network issues.
  • Repair network issues as needed.
  • Maintain up to date network topology drawings
  • Deploy network systems.
  • Maintain network systems.
  • Support network life cycle stages such as design, configure, test, deploy, and maintain.

Qualifications

Requires 16+ years with BS/BA or 14+ years with MS/MA or 10+ years with Ph.D.

  • Demonstrated thorough knowledge of the TCP IP protocol suite, IP subnets and masking, and routing protocols.
  • Demonstrated experience working in Local Area Network (LAN) environments Demonstrated experience working in Wide Area Network (WAN) environments.
  • Demonstrated experience designing, configuring and troubleshooting Routing and Switching systems (Cisco and Juniper expertise required); understanding of Routing Protocols (OSPF, EIGRP, and BGP) and Gateway Redundancy Protocols (HSRP/VRRP).
  • Must have demonstrated experience implementing L2 and L3 VPN across an MPLS
  • Demonstrated experience with network security such as firewalls and ACL'S.
  • Demonstrated experience working with Type 1 cryptographic equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience with ground-based satellite termination equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience using Microsoft Visio for network topology creation/modification.
  • Ability to explain protocols, technical procedures and processes clearly and accurately to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to develop and prepare complex technical documents, reports and proposals.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to resolve problems in a professional manner, lead working groups, negotiate and create consensus.
  • Cisco Certified Network Professional Certification (CCNP)
