The Small Engine Mechanic diagnoses, adjusts, repairs, or overhauls small engines used to power lawn mowers, chain saws, and related equipment. The hours availability of this position will vary with season and workload. The position has a full time option with the addition of Sales Floor/Store Support positions if interested. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Include the following. Other duties may be assigned. • Repair and maintains gasoline & electric engines used to power equipment such as portable saws, lawn mowers, generators, and compressors. • Adjusts points, valves, carburetors, distributors, and spark plug gaps, using feeler gauges. • Reassembles engines after repair or maintenance work is complete. • Records repairs made, time spent, and parts used. • Performs routine maintenance such as cleaning and oiling parts, honing cylinders, and tuning ignition systems. • Obtains problem descriptions from customers, and prepares cost estimates for repairs. • Tests and inspects engines to determine malfunctions, to locate missing and broken parts, and to verify repairs, using diagnostic instruments. • Repairs or replaces defective parts such as magnetos, water pumps, gears, pistons, and carburetors, using hand tools. • Sell parts and equipment as part of their job function. • Demonstrate to customers how to maintain equipment. • Follow established guidelines for certified warranty repair and approval process. • Order needed parts and equipment. • Create customer statements at completion of repair work. Knowledge requirements for Small Engine Mechanic Mechanical- Working knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance. Customer Service- Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction. Clerical- Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files, records and other office procedures. Producing and Processing- Knowledge of production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods. The Small Engine Mechanic needs the skill of understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents. Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and the skills to talk to others to convey information effectively. The skill to repair machines or systems using the needed tools. Ability to determine causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it. The skill to perform routine maintenance on equipment and determine when and what kind of maintenance is needed. Education/Training High School or GED equivalent required. Completion of Small Engine or related Certificates or Diplomas preferred. Experience Must have previous mechanical, troubleshooting and repair experience. Physical Demands Standing, walking, lifting (up to 50lbs) and climbing.
