Gridtern Program Overview

Our Gridtern Program is a structured paid summer internship opportunity established to provide you with hands-on learning experience as well as exposure to various functions within our company as your introduction to the energy industry. Your summer will be filled with hands on projects and assignments, countless networking opportunities, field learning experiences and professional development.

Gridterns will start their summer on either May 23rd or June 6th 2022. Here at National Grid we believe what you achieve while working, is more important than where you do your work. Understanding that different moments call for different environments, we are taking the approach that the future of work is hybrid. Put simply, most of our teams follow a mixture of both home and office working. Specific department set ups do vary and will be identified later in the selection process.

Participating Departments Overview

Internship responsibilities will vary on department placement. With over 200 intern positions being offered for the summer, we don’t advertise them all individually; below are a handful of examples of 2022 participating departments to showcase the array of opportunities!

Electric Project Development

Our Electric Project Development department is responsible for the planning, delivery, management, and governance of our Complex Electric Capital Projects. The team ensures that these projects are developed within cost, optimize the design and development, as well as engage with our key stakeholders to ensure adherence to various processes and standards.

Option Solution Engineering

Our Option Solution Engineering department is part of our Transmission team and is responsible for creating the Option Solutions Document (OSD). This document looks to identify high level scope and cost of a project for various substation or transmission line needs.

T&D Grid Modernization

Our T&D Grid Modernization department is responsible for the delivery and program management of digital substation and grid modernization projects. These new technology deployments require focused support to deploy at scale while minimizing risk of deployment. The team oversees all the phases of implementation including technology review and selection; defining project budget, scope and timeline; distribution planning and design; project management; internal and external reporting and tracking; and stakeholder engagement.

Gas Construction Engineering

The Gas Construction Engineering department is responsible for efficiently designing various gas distribution construction projects within our service territories. Once the project has been designed, the team monitors these projects by conducting routine site visits until completion.
