General Summary
The Medical Assistant works with the physicians and/or non-physician providers in the clinical area to provide excellent, seamless patient care - from the efficient patient flow during office visits through patient follow-up and service in reporting test results, timely response to questions and requests for prescriptions and ensuring patient encounters are accurately and promptly recorded in the electronic medicals records system.
Essential Job Functions
- Prior to each office visit, ensure that chart is updated with required documentation and records such as, lab results, X-rays, imaging reports, hospital records, PCP encounter notes and other documentation as required for review and discussion with patient during the visit by the providers
- Interview patient - verify and document, reason for visit, medical and social history, current medications, allergies; measure and record current vital signs as required
- Draw and collect blood samples from patients and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis
- Ensure exam rooms are cleaned and sanitized between each patient and that supplies are maintained and adequate for each room
- Assist or conduct office-based procedures and tests as directed by providers
- Provide patients with educational materials and samples as appropriate or directed by providers, record in medical records and respond to questions patients may have regarding these items
- Educate patients on the proper use of medications and obtain prior authorizations for prescriptions and office-based procedures as necessary
- Maintain equipment as required by current standard of care and OSHA recommendations
- Complete billing daily for labs and injections
- Other duties as assigned, including answering phones and scheduling appointments
Education and Experience
· Completed certification program for Medical Assistant
· At least one year of experience working with patients in either a physician’s office or hospital, experience in a gastroenterology office a plus
· Knowledge and experience in using Electronic Medical Records, use of eClinicalWorks a plus
