The position reviews and analyzes medical claims and billing edits to aid in claim resolution. Pre-AR responsibilities are to ensure that the medical claims are reviewed for possible reimbursement issues and billed out appropriately. The AR responsibilities are to analyze and research medical claims to identify appropriate resolution. As arranged RESPONSIBILITIES: Resolve various medical billing edits within established timelines. Identify trends and issues with insurance denials and billing edits. Verbally communicate the issues and propose solutions to the supervisor by preparing a written summary of departmental issues and concerns. Follow-up (in-bound and out-bound phone calls and e-mail) with University departments and various insurance companies regarding claim submission. Customer Service team is required to be on phones M-F, 9:00a – 4:30p MST. Analyze trend reports to reduce AR by contacting the insurance and escalating payer issues to resolve unpaid claims. Write appeal letters using the established insurance guidelines to resolve collection barriers. Respond to written and email correspondence within established timelines. Call patients and insurance companies to follow-up with account information. Meets productivity and accuracy expectations of the position. May provide training to others on billing procedures and practices. Overtime may be required. Other duties as assigned. Problem Solving The Billing Specialist directly affects the unit or clinic profitability by following up for payment and accurately coding visits and procedures. This position has the authority to negotiate payment settlements for patients or with insurance companies and authorize patient discounts within the policy and procedure guidelines. The incumbent resolves issues with insurance companies regarding incorrect registration information, claims processing, contract reimbursement amounts and coding issues. Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may be required Nearly Continuously: Sitting, hearing, listening, talking. Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), walking. Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead. QUALIFICATIONS: Three years medical billing experience and one year of coding experience using ICD-10-CM or equivalency required. Thorough knowledge of entire billing process, demonstrated computer skills, human relations and effective communication skills are also required.
