Job Description
A School Police Officer (SPO)/ School Security Officer(SSO) is responsible for enforcing good order (as defined by 24 P.S. • 7-778) in school buildings, on school buses, and on school grounds. The SPO/SSO shall maintain professional relationships with local law enforcement, assist with investigations as needed, and coordinate safety efforts with other first responders and staff from all schools in the districts.
Knowledge & Skill Requirements Education Required: High School Diploma or GED required.
Certification Required: Maintain current Act 120 or Act 235 certification by successfully completing all applicable annual trainings, annual firearms qualification. Interested Federal Law Enforcement Officers and Military Police Officers may request a waiver from the Act 120-1974 requirements directly from MPOETC: https://www.psp.pa.gov/MPOETC/training/Pages/Federal-Law-Enforcement-and-Military-Police-Officers.aspx. OC spray, Baton and other equipment certification, as needed. CPR/First Aid/AED. Prior LE preferred but not required.
Skills: Able to effectively work within the unique environment of educational facilities, with staff, students, parents/guardians, and law enforcement/first responders. Be able to apply discretion in consideration of the unique nature of the environment, and support the consequences given by staff and administration when appropriate for the development of the students. Able to produce timely, accurate, and complete incident reports. Computer skills to include Microsoft Word and Excel. Excellent report writing and verbal communication skills.
