Overview

The Credit Product Management ("CPM") team was recently developed to manage first line credit risk consistently across all Corporate Investment Banking Coverage and Structure Debt Verticals. The function introduces several first line capabilities including (a) Enterprise Valuation, (b)Quality Assurance/Quality Control, (c) Portfolio Management, (d) Credit Training, (e) Strategy & Change Management, and (f) Execution. The team also oversees existing underwriting and portfolio monitoring functions.

CPM provides oversight to ensure consistent credit quality, standards, and efficiency. The team is responsible for driving credit risk culture in the front office, centered on excellence in credit analysis, underwriting and monitoring, adherence to enhance credit governance, regulatory expectations, and industry best practices. We also:

    Own the of First Line Credit Risk (underwriting and portfolio monitoring). Ensure continuous adoption of leading practices in credit analysis, underwriting and portfolio monitoring; drive consistency across business sectors (co-ownership of credit training program).
  • Are responsible for owning (i) credit lifecycle policies, procedures, and templates to describe well the target operating model, and (ii) controls against these to ensure performance across financing business lines is in line with expectations.
  • Are key stakeholder in both driving initiatives to create more efficient risk reporting and monitoring across SMBC's credit portfolio and opining on business decisions as they relate to investment strategy and optimized capital allocation.
  • Partner with underwriters and relationship managers to support execution of SMBC's business strategy consistent with SMBC's credit risk appetite and regulatory expectations.

The anticipated salary range for this role is between $85,000 and $131,000. The specific salary offered to an applicant will be based on their individual qualifications, experiences, and an analysis of the current compensation paid in their geography and the market for similar roles at the time of hire. The role may also be eligible for an annual discretionary incentive award. In addition to cash compensation, SMBC offers a competitive portfolio of benefits to its employees.

Responsibilities
  • Manage and maintain branch-wide portfolio management reporting, including performance against Credit Risk Limit Framework, and other essential loan / credit facility characteristics such as underwriting exceptions.
  • Coordinate portfolio management activities of 1st and 2nd (CAD) line of defense.
  • Maintain Credit Risk Appetite, Credit Policies and Procedures as assigned.
  • Act as center of competence on credit and portfolio related subjects.
  • Support alignment with regulatory guidance.
  • Responsible for identifying, acting on and escalating risks.
Qualifications
  • Demonstrable financial services experience, including 3+ years of experience in Banking, Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business Administration or similar
  • Conversant in credit policy matters
  • Knowledgable risk analysis and risk management processes for one or more risk categories, product, or lending areas
  • Analytical skills, with the ability to identify root causes and trends and anticipate issues
  • Ability to recognize emerging risks, both financial and non-financial
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to coordinate and manage large review teams
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and concisely to audiences of varying levels of seniority
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships and exert influence without direct authority
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
