We are seeking a Forklift Driver/Boat Yard Maintenance Person to become an integral part of our marina team! You will be responsible for any and all of the boat handling functions, yard and dock care, equipment care, and a number of miscellaneous functions in the marina. This job involves direct contact with customers and the property of customers.

SUMMARY:

REPORTS TO: SERVICE MANAGER/YARD FOREMAN

DEPARTMENT: OPERATIONS

Duties consist of all of the boat handling functions, yard and dock care, equipment care, and a number of miscellaneous functions in the marina. The employee has direct contact with customers and property of customers.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To operate the forklift and straddle cranes for handling and transporting of boats between the in/out storage building, the yard storage locations, service yards, and the launching areas.
  • To clean and prepare boats for painting, storage, or service work; including scraping and removing marine growth, pressure washing, and wet or dry sandblasting.
  • To block, shore, and secure vessels for storage in the yards.
  • To perform in-water boat handling operations; including movements of boats from slip to slip, or from slips or floating docks to the straddle crane piers, tying boats properly into slips, and towing.
  • To provide assistance to customers entering and departing slips, floating docks, or the straddle crane piers.
  • To perform emergency storm procedures.
  • To assist in new construction or repair projects.
  • To maintain the cleanliness, appearance, safety conditions, and general order on the docks, in/out storage building, storage yards, and all grounds. This includes assuring that
  • The storage spaces are raked clean before boats are blocked and that customers maintain cleanliness (or are charged appropriately for cleanup services.) this also includes mowing and daily trash pickups (as required) from grounds, offices, bathrooms, shops, etc., and cleaning (as required) in the bathrooms, showers, shops, office, store, or any buildings or areas.
  • In the absence of a manager or supervisor, to accomplish tasks as have been routinely assigned.
  • Thoroughly and completely document all work accomplished, all contacts made to customer, and any other information pertinent to each and every job.
  • To log all movements of boats in the forklift log.
  • To advise the DockMasters office of any operations or activities that may require additional billing. This includes anything other than normal forklift in/out services or services specifically requested by another department manager, and specifically includes any service requested by anyone not an employee of cape marina.
  • To accomplish all work completely and properly, and to assure that boats are stored or blocked in a safe condition. In any case where unsafe conditions exist, to immediately notify the operations department manager, or in his absence, any other person in authority.
  • To frequently inspect the blocking or shoring of all vessels stored on the cape marina premises, and to assure that such blocking is safe and adequate and to especially insure that customers have not in any way changed or altered blocking or shoring.
  • To assure that property under the care, custody, and control of the operations department, including both customer and cape marina equipment, is properly cared for (ie., not left out in the weather, drain plugs removed, engine hatches installed, exposed machinery covered and protected, power connected, batteries disconnected, if applicable, etc.)
  • To inspect every boat launched from the cape marina premises to assure that no unsafe conditions exist, which could result in loss of or damage to the vessel, or injury to persons.
  • To inspect frequently to assure that all customers comply with the terms and conditions of their appropriate storage agreements. In any case where unsafe conditions exist, to notify the operations department manager and to take the appropriate action to notify customers of such conditions, and to remedy them if necessary
  • To continually monitor the entire marina premises to assure that no unauthorized work ( especially including sanding of bottom paints, spray painting, sandblasting, or other hazardous work) is done on the cape marina premises, and that no unauthorized contractors or persons working for hire are doing work of any kind on the premises.
  • To properly tag and identify all boats on the cape marina premises.
  • To know, understand, and adhere to the “yellow tag” and “red tag” systems.
  • To maintain a continuing contact with the Dockmasters office to assure that the office is informed of the presence, current location, and storage status of all boats on the cape marina premises.
  • To adhere to estimates where required, and to assure that the operations department manager is notified of any need to deviate from estimates.
  • To maintain a continuing routine of inspections on all boats for the purpose of discovering problems and potential additional service work (as well as providing for the safety of the customer), and to notify the operations dept manager of any findings.
  • To assure that any boat taken off premises for sea trials, etc., is safety equipped and registered in accordance with USCG and state regulations. And that no boat is taken off the premises by water without equipment for communicating with the marina.
  • To follow parts dept and ships store procedures for obtaining materials.
  • To cooperate in all work efforts with the mechanical service dept, the hull and deck repair dept, the parts dept, and the ships store to assure a smooth and timely flow of work.
  • To adhere to schedules as closely as possible, to anticipate scheduling problems and changes, and to coordinate work efforts with the customer, the mechanical service department, the hull and deck repair department, the parts department, and the ships store to assure a smooth and timely flow of work.
  • To assist the ships store as required in the dispensing of fuel, maintenance of the fuel sales books, and daily readings of the fuel tank levels.
  • To be aware of the stocks of service supplies (ie. Hydraulic fluids, sand, etc.) in addition, to notify the operations department manager when supplies are low.
  • To care for and maintain all tools and cape marina property in custody of the operations dept.
  • To assist in maintaining electrical, water, sewage, fuel storage, and fuel dispensing equipment.
  • To notify the mechanical service department and hull and deck repair department (through internal job orders) of any equipment problems requiring the services of those departments.
  • To care for and maintain all signs, including buildings, stand-alones, and docks as to appearance and messages.
  • To assure the security of the in/out storage building, docks, storage yards, and the surrounding area. This includes assuring that the gates are locked during appropriate hours, and that all lights and equipment, especially in the in/out storage building, are turned off.
  • To perform routine morning and evening inspections of the docks and moored boats, alert to potential problems or any other dangerous conditions, with special attention to:
    • any vessels that appear to be taking on water
    • any vessels that are improperly tied
    • docks, steps, and ladders in need of repair
    • lights and electrical boxes in need of repair
    • power lines dangling or strung across docks
    • debris, garbage, oil, and/or batteries on docks
    • unauthorized dock boxes etc. Blocking docks
    • unauthorized alterations to docks or marina property
    • vessels not registered with the dockmasters office
  • To care for and maintain all fencing and gates
  • To be knowledgeable in all operations procedures; to be able to provide customer assistance and to help to sell operations and other repair services.
  • To assure that all tasks on job orders are clearly and completely understood, and to accomplish the work as stated.
  • To assure that all time expended is properly accounted for, is documented on a work order, and is properly billed either to a customer, to another department, or internally.
  • To check fuel deliveries and provide assistance in offloading fuels.
  • To be alert to all areas in the operation department for suggestion to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
  • To be knowledgeable in all special instructions for fire, hurricane preparations, pollution control, safety standards, human relations, and to perform as required by these instructions.
  • To monitor all activities of any persons, including all employees, and all events that take place on the marina premises. To report, and to respond as necessary, in the event of any occurrence or actions which are not in the best interest of the marina. To assure that no harm or loss happens to any person or property on the marina premises. In the event that the immediate supervisor of an employee causing a problem or not performing satisfactorily is not on the premises or cannot be reached, to notify the senior manager on the premises of the problem.
  • To be responsible for the accomplishment of additional miscellaneous tasks as may be required on occasion.
