Job Title: Food Service Employee

 

Summary

Performs a wide range of duties involved with preparing and/or serving foods in one or more of a variety of food service environments. May perform duties that include preparing salad items, hot and cold foods, fried foods, customer order requests, as appropriate to the position. Duties also include cleaning and sanitizing work areas, equipment, utensils, small-wares and similar. Assists in the set-up, service, collecting of garbage/trash; as appropriate to the area of operation. Will serve food to customers, as appropriate. Must provide excellent customer service and adhere to recipes at all times.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

1.      Set up food service area, equipment and utensils, under detailed instruction from manager, in accordance with specific area needs; checks food temperatures and/or prepares areas for daily operations; operates cooking equipment as required.

2.      Conveys food and supplies from the walk-in cooler, freezer, or dry storage area to the serving/cooking area either by carrying or by utilizing a cart.

3.      Follows proper procedures in setting up hot and cold food displays, preparation coolers, and preparation areas, chooses proper utensils for all preparation coolers and areas and hot food warmers to appropriate temperature for menu items.

4.      Prepares hot and cold meat, vegetables, bread, sandwiches, pizza, fried food, and/or other similar food items, as appropriate to the position for display in both cold and warm display units.

5.      Serves food items to customers from hot food warmer/plates, or by making menu items to order per customer requests, in accordance with specific instructions, ensuring that appropriate portions are served.

6.      May serve a range of hot and cold food items from counters and/or food warmers.

7.      Replenishes foods, plastic-ware, napkins, condiments/sauces/dressings, and paper menus as needed.

8.      Attends to day-to-day problems and needs concerning equipment and food supplies; detects and ensures proper disposal of spoiled or unattractive food, defective supplies/equipment, and/or other unusual conditions, as directed by supervisor.

9.      Keep a clean and maintained work area, including floors, facilities, walk-in coolers and freezers, utensils, small-wares, dining areas, sinks, and equipment; collects and places trash in designated containers; as appropriate to the area of operation.

10.  Wash all pots, pans, utensils, and other small-wares ensuring sanitary handling and proper organization of such items.

11.  Provide guidance and training to other employees performing related work.

12.  Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned by manager.

13.  Must work as a team with all Big Apple employees and managers. Must assist other food service workers as needed throughout shift. Must remain positive and professional at all times.

 

Minimum Job Requirements

·         High school diploma or GED.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

·         Understanding of supplies, equipment, and food ordering and inventory control.

·         Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions, including recipes.

·         Ability to read, write, and do basic math.

·         Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.

·         Ability to safely use cleaning equipment and supplies.

·         Ability to lead and train other employees.

·         Ability to lift and manipulate objects up to 50 pounds.

·         Ability to reach, bend, stoop, push, pull, and frequently lift up to 50 pounds.

·         Knowledge of food service safety and temperature requirements.

·         Skill in cooking and preparing a variety of foods.

·         Knowledge of food preparation and presentation methods, techniques, and quality standards.

 

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

·         Considerable physical activity. May require handling of objects that can weigh up to 50 lbs.

·         Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.

·         Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.

·         Varying schedule will include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
