Aviation Economist & Financial Analyst/Senior Analyst

The Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA), the largest airline pilot union in the world and the largest non-governmental aviation safety organization in the world (representing over 77,000 pilots at 43 U.S. and Canadian airlines) seeks an experienced Senior Analyst for our office in Tysons (McLean), Virginia. With minimal or no direction, the Senior Analyst provides strategic and technical support to a portfolio of ALPA carriers and internal projects and delivers economic, financial, and contract information, analyses, and recommendations to elected and appointed pilot representatives and committee volunteers at ALPA carriers with memberships typically ranging from 1,500 to 6,000 pilots. Specific functions include monitoring and presenting economic, financial, and industry updates to pilot leaders; conducting airline-specific financial analyses, including historical cash flow, debt and ratio analysis, and projections; developing cost models addressing the economic components of pilot contracts in support of complex and, often, time-sensitive negotiations; analyzing airline-specific cost and revenue components, relating them to various pilot productivity measurements and determining their impact on airline productivity; and, supporting legal proceedings by conducting relevant analyses, preparing the results of these analyses, and, at times, providing expert testimony. Additionally, they ensure the Association's quality standards are met on all deliverables under their portfolio of properties; establish and sustain effective relationships with pilot representatives, company counterparts, and ALPA staff; and, mentor and guide analysts with less experience.

Travel: usually 25 - 50%; sporadically 60%.

Minimum Requirements:

    Bachelor's degree in relevant area, e.g., Business Administration, Economics, Finance, or related field, from an accredited college or university required; master's degree or completion of post-graduate courses in related field preferred; or, the equivalent combination of education and practical experience.
  • Five (5) years of related experience required, eight (8) or more years strongly preferred; to include significant experience in financial and/or economic analysis.
  • Experience in the airline industry and collective bargaining a plus. At management discretion, significant and in-depth, directly applicable, experience may be substituted for some of the above requirements.
  • Experience using air transportation databases, e.g., Form 41, T-100, O&D Survey Data, schedule data, fleet data, and the like, and other sources of information to complete analyses strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of Department of Transportation (DOT) economic data and Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) regulations and filing requirements strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of air transportation economics and pilot labor agreements strongly preferred.
  • Analytical/problem-solving skills to quickly reduce a problem to its key components and to develop unique solutions.
  • Technical writing and presentation skills to communicate effectively with pilot groups, Association Executives, and airline management.
  • Must possess exceptional time management skills; be able to work in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment; and, transition easily between projects.
  • Software: Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook required.
