Location Description

Michael Foods, Inc. located in Mars Hill, Maine. Pineland Farms is one of the largest food manufacturing organizations located in Aroostook County. Our Mars Hill facility has over 200 incredible team members who work together to provide our customers with the best possible potato product.
Responsibilities

Position Summary:

Assists in the planning, coordinating, and directing of the quality assurance program which is designed to ensure quality production of products consistent with established standards by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate line technicians.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Maintenance of laboratory systems to ensure production and shipment of products that meet the customer's requirements. Maintenance of product evaluation techniques, which includes physical, chemical and organoleptic methodologies that ensure compliance to product specifications.
  1. Assist Quality Assurance Manager in coordinating efforts as they relate to customer audits including interaction with external agencies (government, external inspectors) to provide, where possible requested information or services
  1. Become familiar and easily navigate our production systems such as Redzone, Intelex and SAP.
  1. Coordination of efforts with corporate functions (technical services, research, process engineering, customer services) to provide necessary information or services to internal or external customers.
  1. Training and coordination efforts as they relate to Continuous Process Improvement.
  1. Oversight of sanitation leads, providing direction and guidance on sanitation required to adequately address plant concerns and issues.
  1. Ensure compliance of operation with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), as described in the relevant food safety systems and programs. This is accomplished through sanitation inspections and GMP training.
  1. Assist in special projects as assigned by the plant manager, technical services, purchasing, or corporate scheduling.
  1. Must maintain the highest standards of ethics and integrity.
  1. Proactively manage safety by ensuring compliance with all Federal and State regulations and internal Company policies. Regularly complete behavior based safety observation. Ensure unsafe conditions are corrected in a timely manner.
  1. Follow all SQF principles pertinent to the position as specified by the SQF Practitioner.
  1. All food safety and human safety concerns need to be reported to appropriate personnel such as Safety Manager, FSQ Manager, etc.
  1. All other duties as assigned
Qualifications

Knowledge:
  • Excellent computer literacy (MS Office, Word, Excel)
  • Excellent oral and written skills
  • Excellent reasoning and mathematical Skills
  • Strong leadership skills
Education/Experience:

Minimally an Associates Degree (A. S.) from two year college or university; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Ability to understand and pass a Preventive Controls course, HACCP Certification course and SQF Fundamentals course.

Supervisory skills:

Directly supervises employees in the Quality Assurance Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. In the absence of the QA Supervisor the Lab Tech II has been identified as the designated back up. In the absence of the FSQA manager the QA Supervisor becomes the Secondary SQF Practitioner.

Language Skills

He/She need to be able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, have the ability to write routine reports and correspondence, and the ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. He/She needs to have the ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. He/She needs to have the ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations. Understanding of the 5 Whys of root cause analysis.

  • PCQI Certification
  • SQF Practitioner
  • Internal Audit Certification recommended
Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Internet software; Manufacturing software; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.
