Summary/Primary Purpose: The Development Director is responsible for cultivating and managing a fundraising program for an area covering 11 counties. Candidate will prospect and cultivate donor relationships with the intent of identifying donors that qualify for a higher level of personal engagement. This position coordinates the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship efforts for donors through strategic communications, mission-driven donor experiences, and personalization, with a special emphasis on completing the Capital Campaign. The position will work directly for the Corps Officer in Norfolk and in conjunction with the Western Division Development Department and its strategic approach to enhancing annual giving, major giving, and planned giving programs in Norfolk.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The Development Director is responsible for overseeing a range of activities that result in donors feeling appreciated, and connected to The Salvation Army and its mission, and report impact of the donor's gift.
  • This role will partner with leaders, colleagues, and members of the Development Department to achieve organizational goals, with a special emphasis on completing a multi-million-dollar capital campaign.
  • Manage a portfolio of approximately 150 of the organization's giving prospects and donors, managed jointly with the Divisional Director of Corps Development.
  • Cultivate relationships by updating, appreciating, and asking donors to deepen their partnership with The Salvation Army, including solicitation of annual, planned and capital improvement gifts.
  • Responsible for cultivating and managing the Annual Luncheon fundraiser program
  • Help identify executive-level candidates to serve on the Advisory Board and orientate and education current and new members.
  • Execute strategy through face-to-face, phone, email, and USPS communication.
  • Capture new information for entry into the donor's database record regarding donor's interests, relationships, life events, and information about capacity for philanthropic giving.
  • Learn and stay current about Salvation Army programs and projects and effectively communicates the mission to donors.
  • Coordinate with other team members and volunteers and work within budget to implement touch points and events.
  • Demonstrate the ability to respond with urgency to the needs and requests of others, internally and externally, and ensure a high degree of responsiveness to all donors without regard to giving level.
  • May be required to participate in TSA functions and events that occur outside of normal working hours to include weekends and holidays.
  • This role will travel to Omaha Nebraska quarterly for meetings.
  • Driving is an essential function of the position.

Education and/or Experience: Bachelor's Degree preferred or three to five years of non-profit fundraising, relationship building or related work experience in lieu of degree.
