About this job

Description

In the era of near-peer competition, the threats facing our forces are becoming ever more capable; the ability to rapidly and effectively manage our resources from radar timelines to missile rounds will have a major impact on mission success.

The Networked Systems and Integrated Fires Group (A4B) in the Non-Kinetic Warfare Branch of the Air and Missile Defense Sector is seeking an innovative and inspirational leader to serve as Section Supervisor of its Engagement Management Section (A4B-6). The section develops advanced algorithms, concepts and strategies for resource allocation challenges in distributed air and missile defense systems. Such challenges arise in, but are not limited to, weapon-target assignment, engagement planning, and communications traffic scheduling and routing tasks.

As the A4B-6 Section Supervisor, you will:

  • Propose research initiatives and implement inspiring strategies to address current and future resource allocation challenges facing air and missile defense. Set a clear vision and path for the section and prioritize section needs.
  • Actively engage and work with section staff to understand their career objectives and seek to match staff development with project objectives.
  • Assess the section’s current and future work and define and propose the analytical and physical infrastructure necessary to carry out that work. This may include suggesting enhancements to facilities, computing resources, tools, laboratories, work spaces, etc.
  • Provide supervision, monitor technical work for quality and accuracy, and review briefings, analysis, and written communication of technical products as-needed prior to delivery to sponsors.
  • Assist the group supervisor in the interviewing and hiring processes. Assist with, and implement, staff development initiatives, including staff mentoring and onboarding.
  • Work with APL Program Managers to strategically engage existing and new sponsors and pursue new opportunities and research initiatives.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you have...

  • A MS degree in Mathematics, Engineering, Physics or a related field.
  • 4+ years of experience working on problems that involve mathematical modeling and optimization of complex systems.
  • Technical expertise in one or more of the following areas: optimization theory, information theory, communications theory, data fusion, and machine learning.
  • Strong problem formulation and algorithm development skills.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills when interfacing with APL staff and sponsors.
  • Demonstrated strong leadership attributes, including the ability to effectively mentor, motivate and inspire staff.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to relay feedback to the team in a constructive manner.
  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills, as well as good attention to detail.
  • An active Secret clearance with the ability to obtain Top Secret clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you have...

  • PhD degree in Mathematics, Engineering, Physics or a related field.
  • Prior experience analyzing and developing advanced air and missile defense systems.
  • Familiarity with APL’s internal processes including hiring, staff development, innovation opportunities, etc.
  • Experience not only working on, but leading, technical efforts in the air and missile defense community.
  • Peer-reviewed publication history.
  • An active Top Secret clearance.
