Principal Engineer: Distributed Fusion and Controls

For distributed capabilities at scale to work in contested environments, they must be resilient to model error – unexpected actions by the adversary; unexpected deviations in the performance of blue systems; unpredictable reliability of different data feeds; etc. Apogee Research is partnering with several DoD customers to use distributed fusion to drive feedback loops that allow distributed systems to self-stabilize despite model error. These distributed fusion loops span sensor types, platform domains, network qualities, and mission types (ISR, EW, etc.).

We are looking for fusion experts to help us develop these techniques and use them to build robust, operational capabilities (leveraging other Apogee technologies, such as the STITCHES toolchain).

The position is located in our Arlington, VA office – full time in-office is required. Existing DoD Top Secret clearance is preferred, otherwise all candidates must be eligible to obtain one and therefore all candidates must be a US citizen to apply.

Position Responsibilities:

• Develop distributed fusion techniques and support their implementation in operational software
• Architect distributed systems that use these fusion technologies to drive feedback loops to compensate for model error
• Characterize the open-loop and closed-loop performance of the system to evaluate the benefits and robustness of the feedback loops
• Test the technologies via Modeling and Simulation and with replays of real world data
• Support test events and demonstrations on fieldable weapon systems

Minimum Qualifications:

• 7+ years of experience working with real systems with a focus on sensor fusion and/or distributed controls (can be offset by research during PhD)
• Track record of working in research environments but with an ability to understand customer needs and develop operationally relevant systems
• Experience in several programming languages, such as C/C++, Matlab, or Java
• Strong understanding of probability and statistics
• Demonstrated ability to be flexible and remain well organized in a fast-paced environment
