Job Description: Middle School Science Teacher

Overview: We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Science Teacher to join our team in Oakland, CA. As a Science Teacher, you will play a critical role in inspiring and educating students in various aspects of science, aligning with The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). This position requires a commitment to fostering a love for science, critical thinking, and practical problem-solving skills while creating a positive and engaging learning environment.

Organization Background: Aurum Preparatory Academy ("Aurum Prep") is dedicated to equipping all of our 6th to 8th-grade students for success in high school, college, and life. As a middle school, we welcomed our first class of sixth graders in 2017 and have continued to grow each year. In collaboration with parents and families and drawing from research-based best practices, we provide students in deep East Oakland with a top-quality education. Our mission is to empower students to excel academically, become moral leaders in their communities, and shape a brighter future.

Responsibilities:

Curriculum Development and Instruction:

  • Develop and implement engaging and standards-aligned lesson plans that promote student-centered learning in accordance with The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
  • Foster critical thinking, scientific inquiry, and practical problem-solving skills through various teaching methodologies.
  • Create a classroom environment that encourages active participation, collaboration, and enthusiasm for science.

Student Engagement and Differentiated Instruction:

  • Tailor instruction to meet the diverse learning needs of students, providing support to all in reaching their full potential.
  • Implement differentiated instruction strategies to accommodate various learning styles and abilities.
  • Encourage students to explore, question, and discover scientific concepts through hands-on experiments and activities

Laboratory Management:

  • Supervise and maintain laboratory equipment, ensuring safety protocols are followed in accordance with NGSS guidelines.
  • Plan and organize laboratory experiments that enhance students' understanding of scientific principles while aligning with NGSS.
  • Assist students in conducting experiments and interpreting results

Assessment and Progress Monitoring:

  • Design and administer assessments to measure student progress and comprehension of scientific concepts aligned with NGSS.
  • Analyze assessment data to identify areas of strength and improvement, adjusting instructional strategies accordingly.
  • Provide constructive feedback on assignments and assessments to facilitate student growth.

Classroom Management and Discipline:

  • Establish and maintain a positive and inclusive classroom environment that promotes respect, cooperation, and a passion for science, aligned with NGSS principles.
  • Implement effective classroom management strategies to ensure a safe and orderly learning environment.
  • Address disciplinary issues promptly and in alignment with school policies.

Parent and Guardian Communication:

  • Maintain open and regular communication with parents and guardians through meetings, conferences, and progress reports.
  • Collaborate with parents to support student success and address any concerns.

Professional Development:

  • Engage in continuous professional development to stay current with educational trends, teaching methodologies, and best practices.
  • Participate in workshops, seminars, and training opportunities to enhance teaching effectiveness.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in science or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
  • Valid teaching credential in the subject area (if required by the state).
  • Previous teaching experience, preferably in a diverse urban setting.
  • Strong knowledge of science curriculum development, instructional best practices, and educational research, aligned with NGSS.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and classroom management skills.
  • Commitment to educational equity and a belief in the potential of all students.

Job Type: Full-time

Salary: $55000.00 - $85,000.00 per year
