ABOUT 1st STEP ACCOUNTING

Our client, 1st Step Accounting, is on the lookout for a savvy Bookkeeper to be the part of the accounting team of 3 to support their diverse range of virtual small business clients. The Bookkeeper  will play a crucial role in maintaining accurate financial records for clients and ensuring the seamless flow of accounting operations in a primary remote work environment.

ESSENTIAL BOOKKEEPING RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Utilize advanced accounting software and cloud-based systems to record, store, and analyze financial data and transactions for virtual clients.

  • Conduct regular debit, credit and reconciliation of accounts using specialized accounting software and computer spreadsheets.

  • Classify, record, and summarize numerical and financial data, maintaining accurate financial records.

  • Code documents according to company procedures to facilitate streamlined record-keeping.

  • Access computerized financial information to address general and account-specific inquiries.

  • Operate 10-key calculators, typewriters, and copy machines for accurate calculations and document production.

  • Reconcile discrepancies found in financial records and generate comprehensive reports.

  • Perform financial calculations, including amounts due, interest charges, balances, discounts, equity, and principal.

  • Undertake general office duties such as filing, telephone correspondence, and routine administrative tasks.

  • Receive, record, and process cash, checks, and vouchers, ensuring accurate financial transactions.

  • Match order forms with invoices, meticulously recording essential information.

  • Generate and analyze financial reports to provide insights and support decision-making processes.

  • Communicate effectively with virtual clients to gather necessary financial information and address inquiries.

  • Maintain confidentiality and security when handling sensitive financial data in a virtual setting.

  • Collaborate with colleagues in a virtual environment to ensure smooth workflow and effective teamwork.

  • Verify figures, entries, and documents for accuracy, ensuring adherence to proper codes.

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and company policies, procedures, and regulations.

THE SCHEDULE AND WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Schedule: Monday - Friday, 10-6 or 9-5

  • Hybrid: 90% work-from-home and 10% in-office on seldom occasions 

  • Position involves prolonged periods of sitting, requiring consistent use of a desk and computer

  • Confidentiality and Access: The position involves working with sensitive information; confidentiality is crucial. Criminal background checks are required

  • Location: Baltimore, MD (21239) | Must reside in the Maryland commuting area

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

  • Base Salary Range: $60,000

  • Benefits: 401(k) plan with 6% match (vested after 1 year)

  • QSEHRA Health insurance reimbursement up to $400/month

  • 2 weeks PTO

WHAT MAKES THIS BOOKKEEPER SUCCESSFUL

  • Achievement of QBO Pro-Advisor certification within the initial 2 months of employment.

  • A minimum of 2 years of comprehensive experience in full-charge bookkeeping.

  • Proficient use of accounting software, such as QuickBooks and Xero, as well as familiarity with various cloud-based platforms.

  • Demonstrated judgment and decision-making skills, weighing the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to determine the most suitable course.

  • Aptitude in complex problem-solving, involving the identification of intricate issues and the evaluation of options for effective solution implementation.

  • Proven capacity for active learning, grasping the implications of new information for both present and future problem-solving and decision-making.

  • Effective time management, ensuring the efficient use of personal time resources.

  • Robust comprehension of accounting principles, financial statements, and reconciliation processes.

  • Exceptional communication skills, particularly in the context of virtual client interactions.

  • Capability to work autonomously and efficiently manage time in a remote work setting.

  • Keen attention to detail and an unwavering commitment to maintaining accuracy in financial records.

  • A continual learning mindset, actively staying abreast of evolving accounting regulations and industry best practices.

  • Possession of a smartphone for authentication applications.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least an associate degree in accounting

  • QBO Pro-Advisor certification and/or capacity to take the test within 2 months of hire ( company will pay for 10 hours of training to pass the test)

  • Full charge bookkeeping experience handling 20+ small business clients

  • Experience working in a virtual accounting setting
