About the Opportunity

This position supports multiple neuroimmunology-related projects in Dr. Edwin Wan's lab in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Cell Biology. The research group aims to understand how the activation of immune system impacts the progression of neurological diseases, with current focuses on two directions: 1) elucidating the cytokine-mediated signaling pathways that promote neuroinflammation; 2) investigating the role of immune-glial cell interactions in brain recovery following ischemic stroke. The group uses genetically modified mouse strains, in vivo models, advanced imaging techniques, next generation sequencing, and various cellular assays to address our scientific questions. The incumbent serves as a resource contact relative to the research project. Depth skills, knowledge, and interpretive abilities, as well as some creativity, are required to successfully perform duties. Independently uses professional concepts and organizational policies to solve a wide range of moderate to complex problems in imaginative and practical ways. Work effort often addresses non-routine matters within established protocol, guidelines, and/or policies. Work effort has significant impact on client services and operations, producing moderate to major organizational, legal and financial results and/or liabilities. What you'll do:

  • Conducting neuroimmunology-related research, such as animal experiments, primary cell culture, and experiments that employ various cell and molecular biology techniques, with minimal supervision.
  • Overseeing and supporting routine laboratory operations, such as ordering and inventory management, development of experimental protocols, preparation of reagents, and maintenance of animal colonies.
  • Training graduate and undergraduate students and assisting them on their research projects.
  • Assisting the principal investigator in preparing manuscript and grant applications.
  • Assisting the principal investigator in the acquisition of funding from public, private, and governmental sources.
  • Presenting in scientific conferences
  • Maintaining detailed logs of work related activities, including accurate laboratory records and data on research methods, procedures, and results.
  • Overseeing research facilities and personnel
    • Assure compliance with research protocols and safety requirements.
    • Oversee and direct undergraduate and graduate researchers in the completion of experiments.
    • Maintain lab equipment; keep accurate inventory of lab assets; monitor and assure proper use and conditions of lab equipment.
Qualifications
  • PhD in immunology, neuroscience, or related science field
  • Experience in using animal models and microscopic imaging techniques.
  • Ability to manage animal colonies and work with mouse models.
  • Cell culture techniques
  • Standard cell and molecular biology techniques, such as DNA and RNA purification, cloning, PCR, western blotting
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to work independently to complete assigned projects.
  • Ability to do strategic planning for program development.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in immunology and/or neuroscience research.
  • Experience in using animal models.
  • Experience in microscopic imaging techniques.
