About the Department:

To support the fitness and recreation goals of a health-conscious community. Center management plans and implements a broad range of year-round recreational, educational, social and cultural programs and activities to use the available facilities of the Center. These programs are designed to attract and serve a variety of individuals and user groups, including but not limited to the general public, youth, school and community groups, the elderly and persons with disabilities.

About the Position:

Under the direction of the General Manager, the Aquatic Operations Manager is responsible for the overall management of the Center's natatorium. This includes responsibility for operations, leadership, risk management, event planning and management, maintenance, equipment and supply procurement, financial management, and programming. Ensures that the aquatics facilities are safe, well-maintained, and adequately staffed for daily use and special events.

This position is required to work occasional evening and weekend hours.

Responsibilities:

Aquatic Operations:

  • Ensures pool inspections, maintenance and repairs are completed within health and safety regulations and guidelines established by the University, County and Commonwealth of Virginia;
  • Conducts or contracts repairs in a timely manner;
  • Ensures accurate and complete daily chemical and maintenance logs are maintained to document safe aquatic operations;
  • Ensures the natatorium has the supplies and equipment needed;
  • Reviews, evaluates, updates and drills emergency action protocols on a regular basis; and
  • Ensures contracted groups use the facility in a safe and developmental manner consistent with Freedom Center and University policies and procedures.

Personnel Management:

  • Recruits, selects, onboards, trains and supervises the Pool Manager and the Aquatic Program Specialist to ensure high quality service delivery of Freedom Center programs, classes and events;
  • Assists the aquatics managers to ensure facility safety and satisfaction of customer expectations by hiring and managing water safety instructors, lifeguard and head lifeguard staff in accordance with safety standards and Freedom Center business plan objectives;
  • Conducts training opportunities for aquatic managers to ensure growth and development. Ensures all certifications are active. Provides positive, developmental leadership, supervision, mentoring, and training to a multigenerational, diverse team;
  • Assimilates and disseminates a comprehensive body of information to staff to ensure a safe, effective, professional, positive team environment, optimal team functioning, employee development and achievement of performance standards. Responsible for the yearly evaluation of department staff;
  • Conducts periodic audit of managers; informs them of needed improvements and timelines for compliance of deficiencies. Assists with periodic audit of other aquatic staff;
  • Maintains up-to-date and accessible records of employee availability, including time off requests;
  • Reviews and submits bi-weekly payroll, ensuring accuracy in payroll functions;
  • Assists pool staff with issues that relate to payroll, human resources etc.; and
  • Directly supervises Pool Manager, Aquatic Program Specialist, Head Lifeguards, Lifeguards, Water Safety Instructors, and Student interns.

Customer Service:

  • Communicates aquatic operation information to internal and external customers in a timely and accurate manner through well-trained staff and all other Freedom Center communication channels. Creates a welcoming and professional environment while maintaining the satisfaction of customer expectations;
  • Responds to internal and external customer concerns in a timely manner, normally 24 hours, and works in accordance with established policies/procedures for the Freedom Center to resolve concerns in a timely manner; and
  • Assists with ensuring daily charts, lap lane schedules and other required grids are completed to communicate any changes in the aquatics area.

Event Planning, Management and Space Utilization:

  • Develops and coordinates the schedule of pool operations to maximize facility use by all parties;
  • Assists with the implementation of facility contracts and agreements. Implements procedures for contractual groups to have a safe and organized visit;
  • Develops and implements facility use strategy and prioritization to maximum revenue to offset operational costs; and
  • Assists the Assistant General Manager with collaborating with swim clubs, public and private schools, community groups, internal departments and others to contract and schedule swim team use, swim meets, rentals, group use, open swim, aquatic fitness programs and aquatic fitness instruction in accordance with established Freedom Center use guidelines, membership and programs demands.

Financial:

  • Responsible for monthly reconciliation of Aquatic Department accounts and the development of a yearly budget for the Department.

Other:

  • Performs other related duties as assigned by General manager and Assistant General Manager. Performs regular Manager on Duty shifts.


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in related field, or the equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Significant progressive professional experience in aquatic operations and management in a community or University setting;
  • Experience with database management, electronic timing systems, electronic scheduling software;
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Suite;
  • Demonstrated skill in leadership and management;
  • Substantial experience with event planning and management (swim meets) and space utilization;
  • Ability to promote positive working relationships and communication with a variety of internal and external customers;
  • Active certifications or able to obtain within 9 months in American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor/Trainers and Lifeguard Instructor Trainers; and
  • Certification in Lifeguarding, CPR, First Aid, AED, Oxygen, and Aquatics Facility Operator license required, or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in related field.
