Description

Rate of pay: $22.50 per class

Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday/Friday 8am-11:30am

Under the direct supervision of the Health and Wellness, the Water Fitness Instructor teaches a safe and effective class which promotes total fitness development for members.

RESPONSIBILITIES :

Each employee will be expected to carry out duties assigned by the Aquatics Director or Health and Wellness Director.
  • Conducts group water exercise classes according to the YMCA of Greater Rochester's Program Quality Guidelines, as well as the specific class format.
  • Supervises class participants and activities to ensure safety and report any irregularities to supervisor immediately.
  • Make yourself available to all members regardless of age, gender, race, socioeconomic status, or fitness level. Share your knowledge and be a resource for sound health and fitness information.
  • Be a professional representative of the YMCA.
  • Distribute handouts/evaluations to course participants as assigned by the Aquatics Director/ Staff Associate.
  • Attend all appropriate all staff meetings, aquatic staff meetings, training sessions and staff functions.
  • Maintain active interest and knowledge of current YMCA programs.
  • Provide setup and cleanup prior to and immediately following class to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all members and staff.
  • Instruct in appropriate attire for a Water Fitness Instructor.
  • Ability to instruct from both land and water.
  • Maintain all required certifications.
  • Attend all required meetings and trainings.
  • All other duties as assigned.


Requirements

  • The candidate must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Possess and maintains CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, Oxygen Administration, Standard First Aid.
  • Current or Aquatic Exercise Association (AEA) Certification

OR

  • AFAA (Aerobics and Fitness Association of America) or ACE (American Council on Exercise) +
  • Orientation to Healthy Living at the Y, Foundations of Listen First, Aquatic Exercise Association Aquatic Fitness Professional.

OR

  • Orientation to Healthy Living, Foundations of Listen First, Principles of Member Health and Fitness, Group Exercise at the Y, Foundations of Group Exercise at the Y (powered by ACE) + Aquatic Exercise Association Aquatic Fitness Professional.
  • High level of attention to detail and quality of programming, service and facilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with all ages of individuals and groups at all ability levels.
  • Must possess and demonstrate excellent communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, maturity and must be able to work independently.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :
  • Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility. Candidates must understand that significant background noise exists in all indoor and outdoor aquatic environments. Candidates who use hearing aids or other corrective devices for hearing should be able to perform all rescue skills and emergency procedures without interruptions to adjust, retrieve, or install or attach a hearing aid or corrective device.
  • Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
  • Meet strength and lifting requirements.
  • Observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility. Candidates who use corrective eyewear should be able to perform all rescue skills and emergency procedures without interruptions to adjust, clear, or retrieve corrective eyewear.
  • Must be able to bend and stoop and move around pool deck as necessary.
