POSITION DESCRIPTION

Lead teachers are inquisitive, nurturing, flexible, and creative. They model lifelong learning for their colleagues and students. They involve themselves in areas of The Walker School beyond their classroom walls. The lead teacher is responsible for fulfilling all responsibilities in accordance with the mission and philosophy of The Walker School and the shared vision for transformative, innovative learning in the Lower School. While serving in the lower school, all teachers model ethical and professional behavior, accept personal responsibility for their actions, and demonstrate a commitment to the school, its mission, and its policies.

The second-grade lead teacher will work alongside a teaching assistant in a collaborative manner but will have the primary responsibility for planning, programming, teaching, evaluating, and reporting for all students in the homeroom class. Lead teachers work with a team of teachers—base classroom and co-curricular teachers—to create a child-centered environment for the students and a cooperative and positive adult working environment. The lead teacher is responsible for establishing relationships with students, encouraging them to communicate respectfully, and optimally developing their problem-solving skills, abilities, interests, and enthusiasm for learning.

QUALIFYING CHARACTERISTICS

The ideal candidate will be an educator who possesses knowledge of age-appropriate and skill-appropriate teaching methodology for elementary students and has experience with the Orton-Gillingham approach and Responsive Classroom. Preference will be given to candidates willing to coach in our Athletic Department, sponsor an afterschool club or activity, or contribute to our performing arts program.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

• Uses best practices in teaching and learning, focusing on differentiated instruction to design and deliver instruction

• Maintains accurate and comprehensive records of each child's performance and progress

• Maintains and directs the appropriate behavior of students

• Develops strong student relations and nurtures the whole child by effectively communicating through active listening and appropriate responses

• Demonstrates effective and timely verbal and written communication with parents pertaining to a child's progress and needs as well as general information (through phone calls, emails, website, conferences, and quarterly progress reports)

• Maintains an organized, pleasant, and inviting environment that supports active learning

• Collaborates with colleagues in lesson planning as well as grade-level and school-wide goals

• Participates actively in professional learning opportunities and demonstrates a growth mindset toward learning

• Integrates technology into the curriculum in a meaningful way that is appropriate to the age and needs of the students and subject matter being taught

• Participates in associated duties such as carpool, lunch, and recess

• Additional responsibilities as assigned by the Lower School Head

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate must possess a Bachelor's Degree, although a Master's Degree is preferred.
