Job Summary

Loudoun County Family Services is seeking a dedicated, energetic, and established professional candidate to lead the Child Protective Services (CPS) Investigations and Family Assessments (I&A) Evening Shift Team that primarily works scheduled times during the evenings, overnight, weekends, and designated holidays. Core work hours are Monday-Friday, 12:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., including rotating on-call shifts to receive and validate referrals from 5 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. or respond to emergency family situations, as required.

This team will consist of five (5) Family Services Specialists and one (1) Senior Family Services Specialist. The successful candidate will be a part of a diverse department that envisions better health, safety, and well-being. The Department supports individuals and families in the community to live their best lives while advocating for those most vulnerable and respecting their right to self-determination.

The CPS Evening Shift Supervisor will provide clinical and administrative supervision and professional leadership to a dynamic team responding to the needs of our most vulnerable children and families. The selected candidate will oversee cases involving protective services to children and families, assuring that complaints, investigations, and assessments are managed according to federal, state, and local policies, including completeness and timeliness. This position requires the individual to maintain a supportive work environment, with the ability to inspire and encourage productivity and teamwork amongst staff. Work is performed in a forward-thinking organization that requires sensitivity to change and responsiveness to changing goals, priorities, and needs.

The successful candidate will:

  • Establish performance expectations and goals for the team.
  • Lead a team of CPS workers with activities and plans to accomplish goals.
  • Promote teamwork and cooperation in the unit.
  • Cover emergencies and provide clinical direction to employees.
  • Lead unit meetings.
  • Monitor staff compliance.
  • Work with a diverse and multi-ethnic population and workforce.
  • Possess the ability to diffuse potentially volatile situations and deal with competing and demanding circumstances.
  • Demonstrate capacity to manage crisis situations that require critical decisions involving people, resources, and property.

The candidate will possess the following knowledge and skills:

  • Knowledge of child protection laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of family dynamics and functioning and human development.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based practices in child welfare.
  • Skill in supervising staff.
  • Skill in organization and time management.
  • Skill in written and verbal communication, including presentations.
  • Ability to identify social problems and needs.
  • Ability to assess the capacity of individuals and families to utilize services in problem-solving.
  • Ability to communicate and establish effective working relationships with clients, coworkers, and the public.
  • Ability to work effectively with law enforcement and the legal system.
  • Ability to prepare reports and maintain case records.
  • Ability to communicate complex ideas effectively to individuals or groups.

Hiring salary will be commensurate with experience. This position is eligible for a $3,000 hiring bonus in accordance with the County's Hiring and Retention Bonus Program.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, or a related field; four (4) years of professional work experience in child, family, adult and aging, or social services setting to include one (1) year of supervisory experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, or a related field; clinical licensure
  • Bi-lingual English and Spanish speaking abilities.
Job Contingencies and Special Requirements
  • Successful candidates must be available to work primarily evenings, nights, and scheduled weekends and holidays.
  • This position is considered essential personnel and will require the report to work during times designated countywide as approved for unscheduled leave regardless of the emergency (e.g., weather, transportation, disaster).
  • Candidate may also be required to work and may be assigned to an alternate worksite(s) within the county to carry out duties that support operational needs.
  • Successful candidates must possess and maintain a valid resident driver's license and undergo driving record, child protective services, credit and criminal background checks.
