Career Opportunity:
The City of Las Vegas Parks & Recreation department is seeking individuals to fill the following positions across our municipal pools this summer (starting rates below):

  • Assistant - $14/hour
  • Lifeguard - $15/hour
  • Lifeguard/WSI - $16/hour
  • Pool Manager - $18/hour
Interview times:
April 27th at Municipal Pool from 9am - 1pm

Location:

These are hourly level, part-time positions. Scheduled hours for this position are limited to 19 hours or less per week (Shift will vary based on the needs of the programs and facility). Hourly employees are also limited to 1,560 hours of work in any 18 month period.Scheduled hours for this position varies from 19hrs per week to 40hrs per week.

Interview Process
Candidates will complete a 10-minute swim followed by a hiring interview. Please bring appropriate swim attire.

Physical Testing Details
As prerequisite for employment, candidates are required to pass a swim test. This includes successful demonstration of the following exercises:

Swim/Tread Event-timed
  • Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface, swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combo of both. (no back or side swimming)
  • Tread water with legs only for 2 minutes (add 10 lb. brick as an option for 1 minute).
  • Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combo of both.
The first 100 yards must be freestyle and will be timed. Maximum allotted time is 1:45.

*Please note: our CLV standard for the 100 yard swim is 1:45. If you did not swim the 100 yard freestyle in under 1:46, and are offered employment, you will be given a specific date in which you must swim this again in under 1:46.

**Please note: our CLV standard for the tread is a 1 minute tread while holding a ten pound brick. The brick. The brick must be held out of the water with both hands. If you wish to attempt this on the date of your tryout, please make staff aware. If offered employment, candidate will be given a specific date in which the event should be completed per our standard.

*Each candidate receives only ONE attempt.

Skill Drill-timed

  • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards.
  • Surface dive down to the depth of 13 feet to retrieve a yellow dummy or 10 pound brick.
  • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the dummy or brick with both hands and keeping the face out of the water.
  • Exit the pool without using the ladder.
TIME LIMIT IS 1 minute 40 seconds.
*Each candidate receives only ONE attempt.

All physical tests are pass or fail. If any part of this physical testing is a "fail," the candidate may retry on a separate date. A candidate can reschedule to retry as many times as they would like until they pass each component of the physical testing details.

The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list for current and/or future openings which may include part-time positions.

SELECTION PROCESS: The selection process will include a review of all applications with only the most qualified participating in an interview. Final candidate selection will include hiring interview (if applicable). Any individual offered employment will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test and complete background check. Some positions may require preliminary background checks.

NOTE: Eligible applicants will be contacted via phone or e-mail only if moving forward to the interview process. If you are not contacted, your application will remain active for a period of four (4) months. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

Lifeguard
Duties include but not limited to the following:

  • Safeguards pool and patrons
  • Monitors activities at the pool to prevent accidents
  • Administers First Aid
  • Cautions swimmers regarding unsafe practices and safety hazards
  • Enforces and adheres to pool rules and regulations
  • Provides general information on pool operation to patrons
  • May set up/take down equipment for program and/or special events
  • Maintains order and cleanliness in the pool and adjoining areas
  • Possible coaching
Lifeguard/ Water Safety Instructor (WSI)
Duties include but not limited to the following:
  • Safeguards pool and patrons
  • Monitors activities at the pool to prevent accidents
  • Administers First Aid
  • Cautions swimmers regarding unsafe practices and safety hazards
  • Enforces and adheres to pool rules and regulations
  • Teach learn-to-swim classes

Pool Manager
Duties include but not limited to the following:
  • Safeguards pool and patrons.
  • Teaches Learn to Swim courses and possible competitive swimming, synchronized swimming and/or water polo.
  • Schedules and supervises staff providing customer service and ensures timecards are completed.
  • May set up and/or take down equipment for program and/or special event.
  • May open and close pool.

Assistant
Duties include but not limited to the following:
  • Candidate will be required to brush the walls of the entire pool
  • Net out pool debris
  • Wash down locker rooms
  • Remove pool deck gum
  • Empty trash and change liners
  • Re-stock restroom supplies
  • Clean windows

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Lifeguard

Minimum 16 years of age
Training:

  • Formal and informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
  • Bilingual skills are desirable
  • Expected to attend and complete all in and out of water mandatory trainings.
License or Certificate:
  • Possession of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification is desired at the date of application and required prior to the date of hire.
    • (Note: The Shallow Water and Aquatic Attraction Lifeguarding Certification is NOT applicable.)
    • The city of Las Vegas offers training and classes for those who are hired by the city of Las Vegas for free
  • Ability to pass physical Swim Testing as mentioned above.

  • Lifeguard/ WSI

    Minimum 16 years of age
    Training:
    • Formal and informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
    • Bilingual skills are desirable
    • Expected to attend and complete all in and out of water mandatory trainings.
    License or Certificate:
    • Possession of the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification
    • Ability to pass physical Swim Testing as mentioned above.

    Pool Manager

    Minimum 18 years of age.
    • Minors are required to have a work permit issued by Clark County Youth and Family Services designated for City of Las Vegas employment.
    Experience:

    • Must have experience managing a pool/facility
    • Must have 12 months experience working as a lifeguard
    Training:
    • Formal and informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
    • Bilingual skills are desirable.
    License or Certificate:
    • Must hold current certifications from the American Red Cross on the date of application: Lifeguard Training, First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and Water Safety Instructor.
    • Must obtain Lifeguard Training Instructor certification within 3 months of hire to this position.
    • Ability to pass physical swim test
    Assistant:
    • Minimum 16 years of age.
    • Formal and informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance
    • Basic computer skills is required
    • Cash handling experience desirable
    • Spanish/English bilingual desirable, but not required
    • First Aid/CPR and AED certifications preferred but not required
