Job SummaryAre you a veterinary technician looking for occasional relief work, or a set part-time schedule? Loudoun County Animal Services (LCAS) is seeking part-time, experienced veterinary technicians to join our pool to work alongside our shelter veterinarian and licensed veterinarian technicians (LVTs) providing preventative and comprehensive medical and behavioral care to shelter animals through June 30, 2024. We are looking for help during normal business hours (Monday-Friday, 8:30-4:30), with occasional opportunities for additional hours. No nights, weekends or on-call shifts.
Technicians will primarily be working to assist with spay/neuter surgery, other soft tissue surgeries as indicated (enucleations, amputations, cystotomies, etc.) and routine medical care. Successful applicants will be proficient in veterinary nursing skills, including but not limited to administration of medicines via all routes, venipuncture, vaccination protocols, surgical monitoring (including pre- and post-surgical care), restraint, and physical examination of animals in our care. Candidates must be able to demonstrate consistent case management skills and sound judgement, while recognizing the differences between high quality shelter medicine and private practice operations. The applicant must have thorough knowledge of the care and handling of cats and dogs, preferably with some familiarity with rabbits and small animals. Strong verbal and written communication skills are required.
Hiring salary is commensurate with experience.
- Associates of Applied Science Degree in Animal Health/Veterinary Technology or related field and two (2) years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must possess a valid driver's license.
- Licensure in the state of Virginia (LVT) a plus
- Bilingual a plus.
- Must successfully complete a criminal background investigation.
- Must successfully complete a physical examination, to include non-DOT drug test.
- This position is expected to be physically demanding, with the potential for exposure to infectious diseases, viruses, noxious fumes and chemicals, extended time standing on feet, as well as risk of injury.
- Must have the ability to handle large and potentially dangerous animals over 75 pounds confidently and safely.
- Must be certified in, or willing to become certified in, Fear-Free science-based, low-stress handling techniques.
