The Systems Engineer is responsible for monitoring and maintaining the operational and technical stability of RouteOne's Production and Test environments. The Systems Engineer will collaborate with internal and external teams to implement monitoring solutions, provide resolution for incidents impacting the production or test environments, and participate in the support on-call rotation. A strong and diverse background in systems administration and technical operations for high-volume Java-based web applications is required for success in this position. The Systems Engineer must have experience with hands-on support of Operating Systems, network, and middleware across a varied spectrum of platforms.


Job Requirements

  • Perform all work in accordance with company's quality programs, standards, and procedures.
  • Work with RouteOne's hosting provider to ensure efficient and smooth operation of our production systems, including administration, monitoring, troubleshooting, support, and emergency response.
  • Serve as part of a 24x7 on-call rotation for resolution of incidents, response to alerts, and escalation of hosting environment issues and emergencies.
  • Provide incident communication and updates to all stakeholders when performance or availability issues arise in the production environment.
  • Utilize and maintain monitoring systems and alerting conditions.
  • Establish and manage operational policies to mitigate risk.
  • Work closely with the team to define requirements, cost, timing, and operational plan for future expansion and growth of our production systems, followed by implementation.
  • Participate in the planning and design of procedures and technical infrastructure for purposes of business continuity in case of disaster or prolonged production outages.
  • Maintain safety, security, and privacy standards throughout all areas of responsibility.

Knowledge

  • Significant understanding of the business, including business impacts relevant to IT Operational issues
  • Experience in online operations with exposure to high availability and large-scale technologies such as clustering, load balancers, etc.
  • Recent hands-on experience in a 24x7 production environment, including participation in an on-call rotation.
  • Experience delivering high uptime in a 24x7 production environment under customer facing SLAs.
  • Working knowledge of network and switching protocols and technologies.
  • Experience in administration of firewalls, VPN, and associated security technologies.
  • Experience with web application infrastructure management and troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of and experience with management of LDAP and security certificates.
  • Experience supporting relational databases and extensive familiarity with SQL.
  • Expertise establishing system-wide standards, policies, procedures, and methods.
  • Proven history of creative problem-solving and contribution to the continuous improvement of procedures.

Skills

  • Experience supporting and administering Internet host/network services including Application Servers, Web Servers, and Relational Databases.
  • Experience with middleware and B2B gateway products.
  • Knowledge of certificate management and LDAP including backup, replacement, and uploading certificates.
  • Experience with LAN/WAN technologies including firewalls, routers, switches, TCP, HTTP, SSL, DNS, etc.
  • Experience with SAN/NAS administration.
  • Experience configuring and administering Oracle databases and related storage dependencies.
  • Hands-on experience with XML, XSL, XSLT, and schema development or administration.
  • Experience with VMware virtualization toolsets such as vSphere and vMotion.
  • Network debugging skills on Cisco (or comparable) core switches and firewall.
  • Experience in scripting with Perl, PHP, or Python.
  • Experience with automated deployment and administration of containerized environments.
  • Ability to Identify and document root cause of technical issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with colleagues.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational and communication skills.
