DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position at the Erie Maritime Museum is responsible for maintaining and repairing the museum's historic watercraft, including the U.S. Brig Niagara. As Shipwright, you will plan and carry out routine maintenance and repairs on the vessels' mechanical and electrical systems. You will also oversee major restoration projects on the U.S. Brig Niagara and other museum watercraft, following U.S. Coast Guard requirements and professional standards. Your work will take place in workshops, shipyards, and on board the Niagara when it is in port. Additionally, you will train museum students and volunteers through workshops and apprenticeship programs. You will have supervisory responsibility over the ship's crew, volunteers, and contractors to ensure completion of maintenance and preservation projects.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

• Full-time employment
• Work hours are 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, Tuesday- Saturday, with 60-minute lunch.
• Some evening and weekend work for meetings and special events will be required.
• Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

• Six months continuous service aboard a 250 ton auxiliary sail vessel maintaining the modern mechanical systems; or
• Any equivalent experience and training.

• This position requires possession of a valid Class C driver's license.

• You must possess five or more years experience in traditional wooden boat construction and/or restoration.
• You must possess three or more years experience serving as the shipwright for tall ships.
• You must possess two or more years supervising and training volunteers, crew and/or apprentices.
• You must possess knowledge of seamanship at Able Bodied level.
• You must be able to perform essential job functions.

• Two or more years experience operating a forklift.
• Two or more years experience operating a crane.
• Two or more years experience rigging tall ships.

• This position falls under the provisions of the Child Protective Services Law.
