Responsibilities

Come be a crucial part of our business as a transactional attorney negotiating and advising on construction related contracts and on other commercial contracting matters. We offer an opportunity to partner with our management team and individual business units to develop business deals, achieve strategic business objectives, and inform and implement corporate contracting standards and risk management strategies. This position will report to our Executive Vice President, Corporate General Counsel.

The successful candidate will join our team in Glen Allen, Virginia. The candidate will primarily support our Virginia business unit and Corporate purchasing department, with opportunity for experience supporting other corporate initiatives.

What You Will Be Doing

    Advancing our core business areas, including transportation and infrastructure construction, site development projects, paving, and asphalt and aggregate materials sales, by drafting and negotiating various contracts (such as construction contracts; subcontracts; professional services agreements; rental agreements; purchase orders; supply agreements; non-disclosure agreements; master services agreements; and joint venture agreements).
  • Advising and supporting the business with general commercial contracting needs in other areas, such as information technology.
  • Leading contract negotiation efforts with our business partners, including industry leading project owners, general contractors, subcontractors, and suppliers, to achieve contract terms consistent with our standard policies and acceptable risk profiles.
  • Collaborating closely with corporate leadership, project managers, purchasing managers and other personnel during the contracting process to understand and achieve business objectives and mitigate risks.
  • Reporting on legal risks to corporate leadership and project management based on review and analysis of project contract documents.
  • Periodically revising company contract templates as needed.
  • Working closely with our Director of Contracts and other members of the Legal Department to update and implement policies and procedures designed to manage contract related legal risks.
  • Working with our Director of Contracts to develop and conduct training for corporate leadership and various business units on commercial contract matters, including contracting procedures and risks.
  • Ensuring compliance with contract development and management policies.
  • Researching legal developments, including legislation and regulations, impacting contracting practices and procedures and proposing new or revised practices and procedures to address such developments.

Qualifications
  • A Juris Doctor from an accredited U.S. law school with strong credentials.
  • An active member of the Virginia State Bar in good standing
  • A minimum of three years of post-bar professional experience.
  • Three or more years of relevant transactional legal experience, including leading contract negotiations and working directly with business units in the negotiation process, is preferred but not required.
  • Prior legal experience in construction law, government transportation or other public works contracts or commercial contracts, is preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge of general corporate law is preferred but not required.
  • Experience with various forms of project delivery types, including Progressive Design-Build, Design-Build, Bid-Build, P3, is preferred but not required.
  • Demonstrated exceptional capabilities in the following areas:
    • Negotiation skills with a temperament to aggressively represent the interests of Allan Myers while achieving a win/win for both sides of the negotiation.
    • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally in person and via technology with staff, outside counsel and third parties, including complex concepts to internal clients and external partners.bility to work within a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment, strong time management and multitasking skills, and ability to independently manage a heavy workload.
    • Ability to think critically, provide effective and creative drafting solutions and effective compromise to resolve problems and disagreements that arise in the contracting process.
