About this job

Our mission is to make biology easier to engineer. Ginkgo is constructing, editing, and redesigning the living world in order to answer the globe's growing challenges in health, energy, food, materials, and more. Our bioengineers make use of an in-house automated foundry for designing and building new organisms.

The Equipment Services team within the Lab Operations department at Ginkgo is responsible for reactive and proactive support across Ginkgo's equipment fleet. In spec, operational equipment is critical to ensuring effective execution of experiments required to deliver on Ginkgo's programs, and the Equipment Services team is directly responsible for ensuring maximum uptime of our foundry equipment.

Responsibilities:

  • Troubleshoot, perform scheduled maintenance, installations, and validation of advanced laboratory equipment following SOPs and manuals without technical oversight.
  • Oversee technical work of less experienced engineers and technicians.
  • Identify and lead strategic initiatives aimed at reducing cost and improving instrument uptime.
  • Lead the development of new runbooks utilized by less experienced staff to resolve issues that arise during regular work (e.g. repairs, PMs, moves, validations).
  • Stay up to date on the latest technology and industry trends and lead efforts to integrate new technologies and industry trends into Ginkgo processes.
  • Provide detailed reports of work completed and update data using work order management software.
  • Close work orders out promptly after the work is complete and notify the stakeholders of the outcome.
  • Embody a "customer first" attitude by keeping stakeholders updated on work progress, any issues that occur and changes to timelines.
  • Develop and onboard new maintenance procedures and SOPs using vendor documentation and guidance for new and existing equipment.
  • Define new SOPs and processes for vendor provided equipment where vendor guidance is non-existent or scarce.
  • Coordinate with other support teams (eg, Facilities and Automation) in the development and support of integrated systems
  • Perform pareto analysis on ticket data, and recommend areas of focus to management based on Ginkgo data and industry benchmarks.

Minimum Requirements:

  • BS in engineering or related field and 3+ years relevant work experience or equivalent education + work experience
  • Aptitude for troubleshooting problems that occur in a production environment.
  • Strong level of efficiency and self-motivation to complete tasks accurately and on time.
  • Process-oriented mindset, with acute attention to detail.
  • Ability to work a rotating shift schedule that requires evening and weekend hours.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Preferred Capabilities and Experience:

  • Experience working with equipment in a clinical or life sciences laboratory setting
  • Experience working in a support role such as a Field Service Engineer
  • Advanced experience or expertise with one or more pieces of equipment or software suites

We also feel that it's important to point out the obvious here - there's a serious lack of diversity in our industry, and that needs to change. Our goal is to help drive that change. Ginkgo is deeply committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all of its practices, especially when it comes to growing our team. Our culture promotes inclusion and embraces how rewarding it is to work with people from all walks of life.
We're developing a powerful biological engineering platform, so we must remain mindful of the many ways our technology can - and will - impact people around the world. We care about how our platform is used, and having a diverse team to build it gives us the best chance that it's something we'll be proud of as it continues to grow. Therefore, it's critical that we incorporate the diverse voices and visions of all those who play a role in the future of biology.
